MacBook Trade-in and Resale Checklist

Prepare the files, accounts and hardware before handing over a MacBook. Keep the device until the data transfer and ownership checks have been completed. This checklist also applies to other Macs where the stated hardware and macOS requirements are met.

Record the Mac and its condition

Confirm the model, storage, serial number, charger and known faults. Obtain the receiving party's terms and inspection requirements. A trade-in estimate is not a final offer.

Verify the backup or migration

Check that essential files open on the backup or replacement Mac. Include local-only folders and application data that may not be in iCloud. If the original Mac cannot start, pause erasure and request a data recovery assessment.

Check accounts and business management

Confirm access to the owner's Apple Account and Find My controls. A company device may need an authorised administrator to release management and enrolment. Possession of a Mac or knowledge of its login password does not prove authority to transfer it.

Choose the correct erase route

Apple's Erase All Content and Settings workflow requires macOS Monterey 12 or later and Apple silicon or the T2 Security Chip. Use Apple's current instructions for the installed version.

If that option is unavailable, follow Apple's sign-out, Recovery, disk-erasure and macOS reinstallation procedure. Do not substitute a quick deletion of files. For an Intel Mac, follow the applicable NVRAM reset instructions in Apple's guide.

Leave the Mac ready for its new owner

After the approved reset, leave the device at Setup Assistant instead of creating an account for the buyer. Check with the receiving party how they want to verify setup and account-lock status. Keep a dated handover record and confirmation of any agreed management release.

When not to erase

Do not erase while recovery, an ownership dispute, a legal hold or an investigation is unresolved. Erasure can remove information that cannot be recovered. Have the scope settled before preparation proceeds.
