Think Your Mac Has Been Hacked? What to Do
Unexpected pop-ups, a moving cursor or an unfamiliar sign-in deserve checking, but none alone proves that a Mac has been compromised. Separate immediate safety, account security and evidence preservation before trying to remove software.
If access appears to be happening now
Stop interacting with the caller or pop-up. Disconnect network access where safe and seek help from a separate trusted device. If payments or banking access are involved, contact the bank through a verified channel.
Where personal safety, coercion or stalking is a concern, use a safer device and obtain specialist support before changing settings that could alert another person. Avoid confronting a suspected actor based on technical symptoms alone.
Preserve the details
Record what happened, the time and time zone, visible warnings and any remote-support session details. Keep original emails and messages. Do not install a collection of scanners, delete logs or erase the Mac if an investigation may be needed.
Check accounts from a trusted device
Use Apple's official site directly to change the Apple Account password and review trusted devices and security details. Review the associated email account and phone number as well. Use the official recovery process if access has been lost.
What a technical assessment checks
ZA Support examines the agreed device and account scope, relevant remote-access settings, installed software, persistence locations and available records. A legitimate remote-support app can still have been misused. Findings distinguish observed facts, interpretations and unanswered questions.
Choose remediation or evidence preservation
Removing unwanted software may be the right repair action, but it can change evidence. Agree the priority before work begins. For a formal investigation, ZA Support handles the technical work and reporting, with qualified partners and legal practitioners engaged for their respective roles.
