Butterfly Keyboard (2016–2019), No Warranty Policy
ZA Support does not offer a warranty on like-for-like butterfly keyboard replacements because the design itself is the cause of failure. Replacing one butterfly keyboard with another butterfly keyboard will very likely produce the same fault. We are transparent about this before you decide to proceed.
Our recommendation: Ask about the scissor-switch keyboard adapter, a replacement top case using the more reliable Magic Keyboard mechanism. Available for select models. Carries a up-to-3 year warranty.
The Butterfly Keyboard Story
Why Apple's 2016–2019 MacBook keyboards fail, what Apple did about it, and what your options are today.
Apple introduces the butterfly keyboard on the 12" MacBook. Thinner than any previous Apple keyboard, but tolerance for dust is severely reduced.
Butterfly mechanism rolls out to MacBook Pro 13" and 15". Reports of sticky and non-registering keys begin almost immediately after launch.
Apple introduces a silicone membrane under the keys to keep dust out, but failures continue. Apple launches a silent Keyboard Service Programme covering affected models.
MacBook Pro 16" ships with a new scissor-switch "Magic" keyboard. Apple quietly acknowledges the butterfly design's dust tolerance problem by abandoning it entirely.
All MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13" models switch to scissor-switch keyboards. The butterfly mechanism is discontinued across the entire Mac line.
Why It Fails
The butterfly mechanism is only 0.55mm thin, so thin that a single crumb or dust particle prevents the key from travelling. Apple's silicone membrane fix (2018) reduced failures but did not solve them.
Apple's Service Programme
Apple ran a silent Keyboard Service Programme covering most 2015–2019 MacBook models. The programme has ended, but ZA Support can still replace your keyboard, we just cannot warrant the result.
The Right Fix
Where a scissor-switch adapter is available for your model, that is the repair we recommend. It uses the updated Magic Keyboard mechanism and carries a warranty from ZA Support.
Signs You Need Keyboard Repair
Any of these symptoms warrants a assessment fee (from R599). We diagnose before we quote, no obligation.
Keys Sticking or Requiring Extra Force
The most common butterfly keyboard failure. Dust or a single crumb under the mechanism causes the key to stick or require significantly more force to press.
Keys Not Registering
You press a key and nothing happens. On butterfly keyboards this usually means the mechanism has physically failed. On newer models it may be a connection issue or liquid ingress.
Double-Typing (Ghost Keypresses)
You type one letter and two appear. A hallmark butterfly keyboard failure mode, the thin mechanism bounces, registering the keypress twice. Apple acknowledged this fault.
Keycap Popped Off
The butterfly clip that holds the keycap is extremely fragile. Once a butterfly keycap pops, it is nearly impossible to reattach reliably. Scissor-switch keycaps are more forgiving.
Liquid Spill on Keyboard
Even a small amount of liquid can corrode keyboard contacts. We clean and assess the underlying components, if liquid reached the logic board we will check that separately.
Entire Row of Keys Dead
When a full row stops working this usually points to a failed ribbon connector or the keyboard assembly itself rather than individual key faults.
Wrong Characters Appearing
Keys registering the wrong character can indicate keyboard damage, a firmware issue, or an incorrect keyboard layout in macOS. We diagnose the root cause before replacing.
Trackpad Clicking Through Keyboard
A swollen battery pushing up from underneath causes the keyboard deck to flex, which can result in phantom trackpad clicks. The battery must be replaced first.

Keyboard Replacement or Cleaning
Full keyboard replacements involve removing the top case and installing the new assembly. Cleaning jobs involve disassembling the affected area, cleaning under the keys, and testing each key individually.
Full Keyboard Test
Before handback we run a complete keyboard test, every key, every modifier, every function key. Touch ID, Touch Bar (where fitted), and backlighting are all verified before the machine leaves us.
Same-Day Where Possible
Most keyboard repairs are completed the same day. If we need to source a specific top case assembly we will confirm the timeline and keep you updated.
