iPhone Trade-in and Resale Checklist
A handover should protect the owner's data and leave the recipient able to activate the iPhone. Complete the transfer checks before erasure, and follow the receiving trade-in provider's instructions on when to reset the phone.
Transfer and verify personal data
Use Apple's supported transfer or backup process. Check photos, contacts, messages and essential apps on the replacement device before removing the originals. Do not manually delete iCloud-synced contacts, photos or documents while signed in; that can delete them from other devices too.
Check account access before the appointment
Make sure the owner can use the Apple Account and trusted phone number. Stolen Device Protection can impose a security delay on some sensitive changes. Do not plan to resolve every account-access problem at the moment of handover.
Unpair accessories and transfer mobile service
If an Apple Watch is paired with the iPhone, follow Apple's unpairing instructions. Arrange SIM or eSIM service transfer with the network provider. If moving to a non-Apple phone, follow Apple's iMessage deregistration advice.
Follow Apple's erase procedure
After the transfer and required sign-out steps, use Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Erase All Content and Settings. Follow the account-password and eSIM prompts for the intended handover.
The exact steps can vary by iOS version and trade-in process. Where the provider requires an in-person assessment before erasure, follow that sequence. Confirm Find My and Activation Lock readiness through the authorised owner process.
Confirm condition and handover
Record model, storage, battery condition, damage, accessories and any remaining management restrictions. Confirm that the recipient can proceed with activation without the previous owner's account. Keep the transaction record; do not disclose passwords to the buyer.
Missing access or damaged device
If the owner cannot access the account, use Apple's recovery process. If the phone cannot start and data is needed, request assessment before erasure. There is no universal password or Activation Lock bypass.
