iPhone and iPad Won't Turn On in Randburg? Here's What We Fix and What It Costs

Your iPhone won't power up. You've tried force restart. You've plugged it in for hours. Nothing. Now you're looking at a black screen and wondering what's happened, how much it'll cost, and whether yo.

We've been repairing Apple devices across Hyde Park and Randburg for over a decade. In that time, we've diagnosed and fixed more than 18,000 devices that refused to turn on—and we've learned that the cause is rarely what owners assume. Sometimes it's a simple software glitch. Sometimes it's a failed battery. Sometimes it's liquid damage or a hardware failure deep inside the logic board. The good news: most of these situations are fixable, and we can usually tell you exactly what's wrong within an hour of dropping your device off.

This guide walks you through what causes this problem, what you can try at home, and when to bring your device to our Randburg-area workshop for professional diagnosis.

Why Your iPhone or iPad Won't Turn On

The reasons an Apple device refuses to power up are more varied than most people realise. We see the same failures repeatedly, and the fix depends entirely on the root cause.

Battery failure is the most common culprit we encounter. If your device has been in use for two or three years, the battery has completed thousands of charge cycles. At a certain point—often around 500 to 800 full cycles—the battery degrades to a point where it cannot hold enough charge to boot the system. Your device might have power inside, but not enough to wake up the logic board.

Liquid damage is the second most frequent issue. Water, coffee, soft drink, or moisture from humidity can corrode components on the logic board or cause a short circuit. Clients from across Randburg and surrounding suburbs often bring devices that got caught in the rain or accidentally submerged. The damage might not show up immediately; sometimes a device works for weeks or months after water exposure, then suddenly fails to turn on.

Software crashes or corrupted firmware can also render a device non-responsive. If an iOS or iPadOS update was interrupted, or if the device crashed during a critical system process, it might get stuck in a bootloop or refuse to respond to any input. These situations usually require a deep software recovery.

Logic board failure is less common but serious. Components on the main processor board can fail due to age, power surges, heat damage, or manufacturing defects. When the logic board is damaged, the device typically won't respond at all—no Apple logo, no vibration, no signs of life.

What You Can Try Before Visiting Us

Before you make the trip to our Hyde Park workshop, there are a few safe steps you can attempt. These won't damage your device and sometimes restore power.

Force restart your device. The method varies by model. For newer iPhones (iPhone 8 and later), press and hold the Volume Up button, then press and hold the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo—usually 10 to 15 seconds. Keep holding even if the power-off slider appears. For older iPhones, you'll hold the Home button and Top (or Side) button together. For iPads, the process depends on whether you have a Home button or not. Apple Support has detailed guides for every model.

Charge your device properly. Use an official Apple charger or a certified third-party charger. Plug it in for at least 30 minutes. Sometimes the battery is so depleted that the device needs several minutes before the screen shows any response. We've seen devices revive after sitting on charge overnight.

Try a different cable and power adapter. A faulty Lightning or USB-C cable can prevent charging, which appears identical to a device that won't turn on. If you have access to another cable and adapter, test with those before assuming the device is broken.

Avoid heat and moisture. Don't place the device near a heater, in direct sunlight, or in high-humidity conditions while troubleshooting. These can accelerate damage if liquid is already present.

If none of these steps restore your device after 24 hours, a professional diagnosis is your next step.

Our Repair Process and Diagnostics in Randburg

When you bring your device to our workshop, we begin with a comprehensive diagnostic assessment. This isn't guesswork; it's a structured process that identifies the fault and determines whether repair is viable.

Step one: Visual inspection. We examine the casing, ports, and screen for obvious signs of damage, corrosion, or water ingress. Liquid damage often leaves visible residue around the charging port or speaker grille.

Step two: Electronic testing. We connect your device to our diagnostic equipment, which reads error codes and system information that a standard restart cannot access. This tells us whether the battery is dead, whether the logic board is responding, or whether there's a more complex issue.

Step three: Component-level diagnosis. If the device still won't power on, we may need to examine specific components. Battery health can be verified. We can test whether liquid has damaged the charging circuits. If needed, we escalate to logic board repair or deeper troubleshooting.

The diagnostic assessment costs R599, and the fee is credited toward your repair if you choose to proceed. This transparent approach means you never pay to diagnose a problem you don't want to fix.

Repair Costs and Turnaround Times

Costs vary widely depending on what's wrong. Here's what we typically see:

A battery replacement usually runs R899 to R1,299 depending on the device model and whether it's an iPhone or iPad. Turnaround is often same-day or next-day.

Liquid damage repair is more complex and more expensive. If corrosion is minimal and isolated to one component, we might replace that component for R1,299 to R2,999. If the logic board itself is compromised, repair costs escalate to R4,999 or higher, and turnaround extends to 5–7 working days. Some logic board repairs are not economically viable, in which case we'll advise you honestly.

Software recovery—getting a device out of a bootloop or corrupted state—typically costs R799 to R1,499 and takes 1–2 hours.

Power circuit or charging port damage ranges from R1,199 to R2,499 depending on how much of the circuit needs replacement.

All repairs come with our standard warranty: 12 months for battery replacements, up to 3 years on logic board work, and 6 months on software recovery. We're confident in our repairs, and we stand behind them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will I lose my data if my iPhone won't turn on?

No. The data on your device is stored on the storage chip, which is separate from the power and display systems. Even if your device is completely unable to power on, the data is intact. We can recover it. In some cases—particularly with liquid damage—data can be transferred to a replacement device or recovered via iCloud backup.

Q: How long does a typical iPhone repair take?

Battery replacements and software recovery usually take 1–2 hours. Logic board repairs and liquid damage remediation can take 3–7 days. We'll give you an accurate timeframe after diagnosis.

Q: Can a device that won't turn on be repaired, or should I just buy a new one?

Most devices that won't turn on can be repaired. Battery failure, liquid damage, and software issues are all fixable. Even some logic board failures are repairable. The only devices we sometimes advise replacing are those with severe logic board damage where repair costs exceed 60–70% of the device's current market value. We'll be honest with you about this before we begin work.

Q: What's the difference between a hard restart and taking it to a repair shop?

A hard restart forces your device to shut down and boot up again, which can clear temporary glitches. If the problem is hardware-based—a dead battery, corroded components, or a failing logic board—a restart won't help. Our diagnostics identify which category your problem falls into.

Q: Do you replace batteries with original Apple batteries?

Yes. We use original Apple batteries or certified third-party equivalents. We don't use counterfeit or substandard components. Every battery replacement includes a 12-month warranty.

Q: What happens if my device has liquid damage and I've already tried to power it on?

Every time you apply power to a wet device, you risk spreading corrosion and causing further damage. If you suspect liquid damage, power the device off immediately and bring it to us without attempting to restart it. We can sometimes salvage devices that haven't been powered on after water exposure; if the device has been powered multiple times, the damage is usually more extensive. Our liquid damage repair service can still help, but recovery becomes less certain.
