Won't Turn On Repair in Fourways: Expert Apple Fix at ZA Support

When your MacBook, iPad or iPhone won't power on, panic sets in quickly. You've got work waiting, deadlines looming, and suddenly you're staring at a device that simply refuses to respond. If you're i.

The "won't turn on" fault sits at the intersection of several possible problems. Sometimes it's a drained battery. Sometimes it's a failed power management circuit. Sometimes liquid has reached the logic board. Sometimes it's something far simpler—a loose display cable or a software glitch that a force restart will clear. The only way to know is to open it up and test methodically, component by component.

That's exactly what we do in our Johannesburg workshop, and we're going to walk you through what that process looks like, what it costs, and what you can do right now if your device won't start.

What Actually Happens When Your Apple Device Won't Turn On

A device that won't power up sits in a grey zone between obvious failure and false alarm. The logic board—that's the main circuit board in any modern Apple device—still has power somewhere. The display isn't showing anything. No Apple logo. No chime. No sign of life.

Our technicians start by ruling out the simplest causes first. Is the battery truly empty? For iPhones and iPads, we connect them to power and wait. Older lithium batteries can be so deeply discharged that they need 20 or 30 minutes before they'll respond. MacBooks are different—we check whether the SMC (System Management Controller) has crashed or whether the power supply itself has failed.

In Fourways, we've seen power-on failures increase during load-shedding periods. The sudden disconnection from mains power, or the voltage spike when power returns, can trip protection circuits on the logic board. It's not permanent damage, but it requires diagnosis.

The ZA Support Diagnostic Process: From R599 Assessment

We charge a flat R599 diagnostic fee to identify the fault. This includes opening the device safely, visual inspection of all power-related components, and testing with our bench power supplies and multimeters. We're looking for burnt components, corrosion, cold solder joints, and logic board faults.

Once we identify the problem, we'll quote you a fixed repair cost before we proceed. No surprises. No hidden charges.

The most common causes we find are:

Battery failure: A dead or failing battery that won't hold charge or won't trigger the boot sequence. Replacement typically costs R1,200 to R2,400 depending on the device.

Power management IC damage: The chip that controls power distribution on the logic board has failed. This usually requires micro-soldering and costs R1,800 to R3,200.

Liquid damage: Water or coffee has corroded the power circuits. Liquid damage repair is more complex and typically ranges from R2,400 to R5,500.

USB-C or Lightning port failure: The charging port itself is damaged, preventing power from reaching the battery. Port replacement runs R1,400 to R2,800.

Software lockup: The device is on but frozen. A force restart or DFU mode recovery clears it. This is free if it's a one-off, but if it happens repeatedly, we investigate deeper.

For MacBooks specifically, we've diagnosed power supply faults, RAM failure, and SSD corruption that all present as "won't turn on". Sometimes we're replacing the entire power supply (R800 to R1,600). Sometimes we're reflowing the logic board to restore cold solder joints (R2,200 to R4,100).

Turnaround Time and Warranty

Once you've approved the repair quote, most power-on faults are turned around within 48 hours. If the part needs ordering from our supplier network, we'll tell you upfront—typically 3 to 5 business days.

Every repair we complete comes with a minimum 12-month parts and labour warranty. For more complex board work, we offer an optional 3-year extended warranty (usually around R400 to R800 depending on the repair value). That covers the specific fault we've fixed; it doesn't cover accidental damage or new faults.

We're confident enough in our work to back it properly. We've been fixing devices in Hyde Park for over a decade, and our warranty claim rate is below 2%.

What You Can Try Before Bringing It In

If your device won't turn on, don't immediately assume it's terminal:

For iPhones and iPads: Connect to power for at least 30 minutes. Try a force restart: press and hold volume up, then volume down, then hold the side button until you see the Apple logo (the exact button sequence varies by model—check Apple's support page). If it still won't start, or if the screen flashes but doesn't boot, it's time for professional diagnosis.

For MacBooks: Press the power button and listen. Do you hear the fan spin? See any LED lights? If yes, the logic board has power but the display isn't working—different fault, often simpler to fix. If nothing happens at all, try resetting the SMC: shut down completely, then press Shift + Control + Option (all on the left side) + Power button for 10 seconds. Release all buttons and wait 5 seconds, then press Power again.

For all devices: If you've recently spilled liquid on it, don't force it. Stop trying. Bring it to us immediately. Every minute of power flowing through wet circuitry spreads corrosion and destroys components. We've repaired more than 8,000 liquid-damaged devices, and the ones that come in fastest have the best recovery rates.

If none of these steps work, book online at zasupport.com/book or WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 to schedule your R599 diagnostic appointment. We'll do the rest.

Why Choose ZA Support in Johannesburg

We're not a franchise. We're not a mail-in service. You walk into our Hyde Park workshop, hand over your device, and you're dealing with the same technicians who will repair it. We specialise in Apple—we don't repair Android phones or Windows laptops. That focus means our team has repaired over 15,000 iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks with power issues specifically.

We understand Fourways. We've had clients drive over from Sunninghill, Sandton, Bryanston, and Kyalami because they want in-person service and a proper warranty. We offer same-day diagnosis seven days a week, and if you're local, you'll often get a call or message within 24 hours with your quote and expected completion date.

All our repairs comply with POPIA privacy standards, and we don't harvest your data or sign you up to marketing lists. We fix your device and get it back to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know if my device's battery is truly dead or if it's a bigger fault?

A truly dead battery will show no response after 30 minutes on a charger. A bigger fault—like logic board damage—also shows no response, but your charger may get warm or the device may feel warm even after disconnecting power. Bring it in for diagnosis; that's what the R599 fee covers.

Q: Will you definitely be able to fix it?

Not always. Severe water damage, physical crushing, or very old devices with obsolete parts sometimes can't be economically repaired. But we'll tell you honestly after diagnosis. In about 94% of "won't turn on" cases, we can get the device working again.

Q: How much will a typical power-on repair cost?

It depends entirely on the fault. Our R599 diagnostic fee includes the full investigation. Most repairs then cost between R1,200 and R3,500. Liquid damage or logic board micro-soldering can reach R5,500. We quote before we repair.

Q: Can I use a generic USB-C charger or power supply if that's the fault?

For iPhones and iPads, yes—any USB-C power adapter will work. For MacBooks, we'd recommend the correct wattage supply to avoid damaging the power management circuits. We stock genuine Apple chargers if you need a replacement.

Q: Do you offer remote support or mail-in repair?

No. Diagnosis requires opening the device and testing with specialised equipment. All our repairs happen in our Hyde Park workshop. You can drop off and collect, or contact us for local delivery options.

Q: What happens if the same fault comes back within warranty?

It won't. Our warranty covers the fault we've repaired. If it reoccurs within 12 months (or 3 years with extended warranty), we fix it again at no cost. If a *different* fault develops, that's a separate repair.
