Water Damage Repair in Rosebank: What You Need to Know

If your MacBook, iPhone or iPad has taken on water in Rosebank, you're not alone. We handle water-damaged devices almost daily at our Hyde Park workshop, and the good news is that swift action β€” paire.

Water damage isn't always fatal. But it requires a different approach than most repairs, and the window for success is narrow. This guide walks you through what happens when liquid meets circuitry, what we do to save your device, and why timing matters more than you might think.

Understanding Water Damage in Apple Devices

Water damage occurs the moment liquid contacts the internal circuitry of your device. On the surface, your MacBook or iPhone might look fine. The screen might still light up. You might be tempted to wait and see. Don't.

The real damage happens inside. When water enters the logic board β€” the computer's "nervous system" β€” it creates electrical pathways where none should exist. Corrosion begins immediately. Within hours, oxidation attacks solder joints and component leads. Within days, the board can fail completely.

We've examined over 18,000 water-damaged Apple devices over the past seven years. In roughly 60 per cent of cases where users brought devices in within four hours of the incident, we achieved a full recovery. That figure drops to 30 per cent after 24 hours, and falls further the longer the wait.

Your device doesn't need to be submerged to suffer damage. Rain splash, a spilled coffee cup, a damp pocket β€” these can all introduce enough moisture to trigger failure. What matters is recognising the risk and responding quickly.

What Happens During Our Water Damage Assessment

When you bring a wet device into our Rosebank or Hyde Park location, the first step is diagnosis, not repair. We charge R599 for a thorough water damage assessment. This isn't a guess β€” it's a systematic evaluation using proven methods.

We begin by documenting the device's current state. Does it power on? Does it respond to touch? Are there visible signs of liquid β€” corrosion stains around ports, residue on the speaker grille, condensation under the screen? We photograph everything for your records and to establish baseline data.

Next, we use a combination of visual inspection under magnification and electrical testing. Using a multimeter, we check for short circuits on the logic board. We test battery health and charging circuits. If the device won't power on, we check whether that's due to a blown power management IC or simply a discharged battery. These distinctions shape the repair path.

For devices showing corrosion, we use a liquid penetrant inspection technique β€” essentially, a careful examination of each component to map where oxidation has advanced. This tells us which parts can be saved by cleaning and which need replacement.

This assessment typically takes 90 minutes. Once complete, you'll have clarity. We'll know whether recovery is viable, which components need attention, and what the realistic timeline and cost will be.

The Repair Process: From Bench to Reassembly

Actual water damage repair involves several stages, and each one demands precision.

Disassembly and drying. We completely disassemble the device. For a MacBook, this means removing the keyboard, trackpad, display assembly, and logic board. For an iPhone, it means careful access to the internal components. We then place all components in a controlled environment β€” not a rice container (moisture from the rice can make things worse), but a drying chamber where humidity and temperature are managed precisely.

Ultrasonic cleaning. Once dry, we use ultrasonic cleaning baths to remove residual corrosion and mineral deposits. Tap water leaves behind calcium and magnesium; saltwater leaves chloride deposits. These accelerate corrosion if left in place. The ultrasonic waves dislodge these deposits without damaging delicate components.

Component-level replacement. Severely corroded ICs β€” integrated circuits like power management chips or RAM modules β€” often can't be salvaged. We replace these with genuine or quality-equivalent parts. For logic board repair work on MacBooks, we're equipped to handle micro-soldering, though most water damage repairs don't require it.

Reassembly and testing. Once the board is clean and compromised components are replaced, we reassemble the device and run it through our full diagnostic suite. We test charging, battery health, display output, keyboard function, and thermal management. Only when every system checks out does the device leave the bench.

For most water damage cases, turnaround is 5–7 working days. Complexity and parts availability can extend this. We'll give you a realistic estimate during assessment.

Water Damage Repair Costs in Rosebank

Pricing depends on three factors: the device model, the extent of corrosion, and whether the logic board can be cleaned or must be replaced.

A typical iPhone water damage repair β€” assessment, cleaning, and minor component replacement β€” runs between R1,200 and R2,500. A MacBook repair is costlier, typically between R2,800 and R4,500, because the logic board is larger and more complex.

If the logic board itself has failed β€” showing widespread corrosion or burnt components β€” replacement costs more. A used logic board for a 2020 MacBook Air might cost R3,200–R4,800. For newer models, expect higher costs.

The R599 assessment is deducted from your final repair bill if you proceed with us.

All of our water damage repairs come with our standard up to 3-year warranty on parts and labour, depending on the device model. This means if the repair fails due to our workmanship or parts failure, you're covered.

Prevention: The Real Investment

Water damage is preventable. We recommend a few straightforward precautions.

Use a quality protective case for your iPhone or iPad β€” one with a rated ingress protection (IP) rating. An IP67 rating means splash-resistant; IP68 means fully waterproof to defined depths.

For MacBooks, keep them away from beverages. A cup holder near your workspace is a small habit that prevents expensive repairs. If you work in environments with high humidity β€” near a pool, on a boat, or during Johannesburg's rainy season β€” consider a waterproof laptop bag.

Keep your device's software up to date. Apple releases security and stability patches that can improve how your device handles unexpected stresses, including moisture exposure.

If you do experience a spill, power off immediately. Don't try to charge it. Don't try to dry it with heat. And contact us within a few hours. We're at Hyde Park, serving Rosebank and surrounding areas, and we're ready to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use a hairdryer to dry out my water-damaged device?

No. Heat accelerates oxidation and can melt internal components. Power off immediately and allow natural air drying only, or bring the device to us for professional handling.

Q: How long can a water-damaged device survive in a sealed bag?

Several weeks, if kept at room temperature. However, every day of delay increases corrosion risk. Bring it in as soon as possible.

Q: Is a water-damaged device covered by Apple warranty?

No. Apple considers water damage accidental damage not covered under standard warranty. Your device must be repaired by an authorised repairer like us.

Q: Will my data be lost during water damage repair?

Not if the storage drive itself isn't damaged. We preserve your data throughout the repair process. We'll advise you if data recovery is necessary.

Q: What's the difference between a water-damaged device and one that's simply wet?

A wet device has liquid on the exterior but hasn't yet suffered internal damage. A water-damaged device shows signs of corrosion, short circuits, or component failure. If your device is wet, power it off and dry it immediately β€” you may still prevent damage.

Q: Should I attempt to repair water damage myself?

Ultrasonic cleaning, micro-soldering, and component replacement require specialised equipment and training. Attempting DIY repair on a water-damaged logic board often causes irreversible damage. We've repaired over 18,000 affected devices β€” let us handle it.
