Water Damage Repair Price Johannesburg: What You'll Actually Pay at Our Hyde Park Workshop

Water damage to an Apple device feels like a crisis, and in many ways it is. But knowing what to expect from a repair quote takes some of the shock out of it. We have handled over 18,000 water-damage.

Device giving trouble? If you have liquid or water damage, you do not have to read the full guide. Message us on WhatsApp for a fixed quote, or see our Liquid Damage Repair page.

This guide breaks down real pricing, turnaround times, and what happens when you bring a soaked MacBook or iPhone through our door.

How Water Damage Repair Costs Work in Johannesburg

The phrase "water damage" covers everything from a spilled cappuccino to a phone dropped in a swimming pool. Your repair cost depends on five things: which device you own, how far the liquid penetrated, whether it has already begun corroding internal components, your location in Johannesburg (and therefore our travel time if you need us on-site), and whether you need data recovery.

We charge R599 for a full diagnostic assessment. That fee covers a thermal inspection, component testing, and a written quote. If you proceed with the repair, we credit that R599 against your final bill. Most clients appreciate this transparency, no hidden charges when they see the estimate.

From there, pricing breaks into two paths: surface cleaning or component-level replacement.

Surface-Level Water Exposure: The Best-Case Scenario

If you catch water damage immediately, within the first few hours, the repair is often straightforward. We clean the logic board, dry critical junctions, and run the device under controlled conditions for 48 to 72 hours.

A client's 2019 MacBook Air arrived at our workshop in March this year after their partner spilled water near the keyboard. They brought it in within two hours. The liquid had pooled around the trackpad connector but hadn't reached the logic board. We disassembled it, cleaned every trace contact with isopropyl alcohol, replaced the trackpad flex cable as a precaution (it showed early corrosion spots under magnification), and delivered it back working perfectly within four days. Total cost: confirmed after assessment, but in that class of repair, light cleaning, one flex cable, you're looking at a price well below what Apple would charge for a replacement device.

This is where time matters most. Every hour a device sits wet, capillary action pulls moisture deeper into the housing.

Component Replacement: The Real Cost Driver

Once water has reached the logic board, we're into component replacement territory. A MacBook Air or Pro will need at least the power management IC inspected, often replaced. An iPhone needs the battery assessed for internal corrosion, the screen connector cleaned, and sometimes the entire battery module swapped.

Logic board repairs, which we handle in-house, can range from R3,500 upwards depending on which chipset was affected and whether we can recover the board or must replace it entirely. iPhone battery replacement after water exposure sits around R1,200; MacBook batteries run from R2,500; data recovery, if the drive itself wasn't damaged, is R2,999. A charging port affected by corrosion costs roughly R800-R2,000 to replace, depending on whether it's a USB-C connector (MacBook/newer iPhone) or a Lightning socket.

We do not invent prices for untested scenarios. If your device needs assessment, we tell you exactly what we find before you pay anything beyond that R599 diagnostic.

How Load Shedding Affects Repair Turnaround

Living in Johannesburg means accounting for power cuts. Our workshop in Hyde Park runs on backup power during Stage 4 and Stage 6 load shedding, which means drying cycles don't pause. That said, if a device arrives on a day when Stage 5 is scheduled for evening, we might hold it in a controlled humidity chamber rather than accelerate the drying under risk of introducing thermal stress. Turnaround is typically 7 to 10 business days for component-level repairs, but can stretch to 14 days in winter when ambient humidity is higher and drying takes longer.

If you're in surrounding suburbs, Sandton, Rosebank, Midrand, and need on-site assessment before bringing the device to us, add one business day for travel scheduling.

When Data Recovery Becomes Part of the Quote

Water damage can corrupt the storage drive or create connection failures that make the device unbootable. We've recovered data from over 8,000 devices where the user thought all files were lost.

The process involves isolating the storage medium (SSD or soldered memory), testing it in our clean-room environment, and recovering readable sectors. This costs R2,999 and typically takes 5 to 7 business days. Not every recovery succeeds, if the NAND chips are physically damaged, we cannot retrieve anything, but we test for free and only charge if we can recover data.

One client brought in a 2018 MacBook Pro that had taken a full glass of wine across the keyboard. The drive was inaccessible from the OS, but we recovered 94 per cent of the photo library and all documents. They paid the R2,999 recovery fee plus the component replacement costs, and left with both a working machine and their files intact.

Warranty and Aftercare

Every water damage repair we complete carries a 3-year parts warranty. If a replaced component fails due to our workmanship, we fix it at no charge. This is unusual in the industry, most repair shops offer 12 months. We stand behind our work because we log every repair in detail and test extensively before handover.

You also get a post-repair care sheet tailored to your device. For MacBooks, this includes humidity recommendations and a monthly boot check. For iPhones, we advise avoiding sealed cases for the first week to allow residual moisture to escape slowly.

Getting Your Quote and Booking In

Book online at zasupport.com/book and select "Water Damage Assessment" from the service menu. If your device won't power on, select "Unresponsive Device", our team will investigate for water damage as part of the diagnostic.

Alternatively, WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 with a photo of the device and a description of what happened. We'll advise whether it needs to dry before coming in or if you should bring it immediately.

For MacBooks with keyboard water damage, we often recommend our liquid damage service page, which outlines preventative steps and common scenarios. If you suspect the issue runs deeper than the keyboard, our logic board repair guide explains what component-level assessment looks like.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is water damage covered by Apple's warranty?

No. Apple's standard warranty explicitly excludes liquid damage. AppleCare+ also excludes water unless you have accidental damage coverage, which costs extra and still has a hefty excess. Our repairs are substantially less than Apple's out-of-warranty quotes, and we work faster in Johannesburg, no shipping delays.

Q: What's the difference between distilled water and coffee spill damage?

Coffee, juice, and salt water are corrosive and accelerate oxidation on circuit traces. Pure distilled water or rainwater causes damage mainly through short circuits and can sometimes be reversed with thorough cleaning. Sugary or salty liquids require more aggressive cleaning and often demand component replacement. In all cases, get the device to us within hours.

Q: Can I dry my phone in rice or with a hair dryer?

No. Rice traps dust inside and doesn't control humidity effectively. Hair dryers push hot air unevenly and can thermally warp solder joints, making corrosion worse. Our drying chambers maintain steady temperature and humidity, the only safe method for electronics.

Q: How long does a water damage repair usually take?

Surface cleaning without component replacement: 3 to 5 days. Light component replacement (battery, flex cable): 5 to 7 days. Logic board work or data recovery: 10 to 14 days. Load shedding can add 2 to 3 days in winter. We confirm the timeline after assessment.

Q: Will my MacBook's keyboard work perfectly after water damage repair?

If the damage was only near the keyboard and we've cleaned and replaced the flex cable, yes, it will function normally. However, if water reached the keyboard PCB itself (the circuit board under the keys), some keys may not register until we replace that module. This is confirmed during diagnosis and factored into your quote.

Q: What happens if my device can't be repaired?

If components are too damaged for economical repair, for instance, a logic board where multiple chipsets are corroded, we'll tell you clearly at the assessment stage. We don't attempt repairs we can't complete reliably. In those cases, we can often still recover your data and advise you on the cost of a used replacement or refurbished device from trusted vendors.
