Water Damage Repair in Fourways: What You Need to Know

Water damage is one of the most stressful things that can happen to your Apple device. Whether it's a spilled coffee, a bathroom accident, or the kind of load shedding-related flooding we've seen acro.

If you're in Fourways and your Mac or iPhone has suffered water damage, you're probably wondering three things: Can it be fixed? How much will it cost? How long will it take? We'll answer all three, plus walk you through what happens when you bring your device to our workshop.

How Water Damage Happens to MacBooks and iPhones

Water damage doesn't always mean total immersion. In our experience, the most common culprits in Hyde Park and the northern suburbs are:

  • Spilled drinks at home or in the office. A cup of tea left near a laptop keyboard is the single most frequent damage we see.
  • Bathroom steam and sink splashes. iPhones taken into showers or left near bathroom vanities absorb moisture that corrodes the logic board slowly over weeks.
  • Load shedding and burst pipes. During wet winters, we see a spike in devices damaged by water ingress from failing plumbing or blocked gutters.
  • Rain exposure. Devices left on car seats, window sills, or in bags without proper protection.
  • The problem isn't always immediate. Some water damage shows symptoms straight away—the device won't turn on, the screen flickers, or you see a liquid detection alert. Other damage is silent. Corrosion spreads across the logic board over days or weeks, and one morning your MacBook simply won't boot.

What Water Damage Actually Does to Your Device

When water reaches the logic board—that's the circuit board that controls everything—it creates two problems. First, water conducts electricity, so it can short-circuit delicate components instantly. Second, minerals in the water (and in tap water especially) leave behind deposits that corrode the copper traces and solder joints. That corrosion spreads, and components stop communicating with each other.

On an iPhone, water typically enters through the speaker, microphone, or charging port. On a MacBook, it flows through the keyboard and down into the logic board cavity. Neither device is truly waterproof, despite what the marketing materials claim.

The good news: if you act quickly and bring your device to a proper repair workshop before corrosion spreads, the chances of a full recovery are high. We've seen devices in from Fourways, Sandton, and the surrounding suburbs come back after weeks of water exposure and work perfectly for another three years.

ZA Support's Water Damage Repair Process

We don't just dry your device and hope for the best. Here's exactly what we do:

Assessment (from R599). You bring your device to our Hyde Park workshop, and we perform a diagnostic inspection. We examine the logic board with magnification to check for visible corrosion or mineral deposits. We test each component—power, storage, display, audio—and document the damage. This assessment takes 30 to 45 minutes, and we provide a written repair plan with a fixed price before any work begins.

Ultrasonic cleaning. If corrosion is present but contained, we place the logic board in an ultrasonic bath with a specialist cleaning solution. The ultrasonic waves dislodge mineral deposits and break down corrosion without damaging the delicate components. This step alone can recover devices that have been water-damaged for months.

Component replacement. If specific components—a power management IC, a memory chip, a capacitor—are damaged beyond cleaning, we replace them. We use only genuine Apple parts or certified equivalents, and every replacement is soldered by a technician with more than ten years' experience.

Reassembly and testing. Once cleaned and repaired, we reassemble your device, run a full diagnostic suite, and stress-test it for 48 hours to ensure stability. If the device passes, it's ready for collection.

How Much Does Water Damage Repair Cost?

The cost depends on the extent of the damage. For iPhones with minor water damage and no visible corrosion, cleaning and reassembly typically runs between R1,200 and R2,400. If a component needs replacing, add R400 to R1,800 depending on the part.

For MacBooks, the cost is higher because the logic board is more complex. A simple clean and reassembly runs R1,800 to R3,200. Component replacements add R600 to R3,500. In rare cases where the entire logic board must be replaced—usually only if corrosion is widespread or the device was submerged for days—the cost can reach R6,500 to R9,200 for a MacBook Air or Pro.

All our water damage repairs come with a 12-month warranty on the repair itself, and we offer an extended 3-year warranty for an additional fee. That warranty covers the specific components we've repaired, not the entire device.

We also offer our standard R599 assessment, which is applied toward the repair cost if you decide to proceed.

Turnaround Time for Water Damage Repairs

Most water damage repairs are completed within 5 to 7 working days. Simple cleaning jobs can be ready in 48 hours. Complex jobs involving multiple component replacements may take up to two weeks. We'll give you a precise timeline during your assessment.

If you need your device back urgently, we offer a priority service option. This moves your repair to the front of the queue and typically reduces turnaround to 24 to 48 hours, though this depends on parts availability.

Prevention and What to Do Immediately

If your device gets wet today, the first thing to do is switch it off immediately. Don't try to charge it. Don't attempt to dry it with heat—a hair dryer or oven will damage the internal components further. Instead, place it in a bag of uncooked rice or silica gel for a few hours, and then bring it to a repair technician.

The worst thing you can do is wait. Corrosion spreads fastest in the first 48 hours after water exposure. If you bring your device to our Hyde Park workshop within a day, we can usually stop the damage from spreading.

To prevent water damage in the future: keep drinks away from your desk, don't take your iPhone into the bathroom without a waterproof case, and avoid using your MacBook during load shedding storms when water ingress from blocked gutters is most likely.

    When Water Damage Means Replacement

Occasionally, the damage is too severe to repair. If the logic board has been corroded for weeks, or if the device was submerged in salt water or contaminated water, the cost of repair may exceed the value of the device. In those cases, we'll advise you honestly, and we can discuss trade-in options or help you source a refurbished replacement.

We've written about liquid damage repair in more detail if you'd like a deeper technical look. You can also learn more about our logic board repair services, which often go hand-in-hand with water damage recovery.

If your device has suffered water damage, don't assume it's beyond help. Book online at zasupport.com/book for a free assessment at our Hyde Park workshop, or WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 with photos of the damage and we'll give you a quick estimate. Most of the time, your device is salvageable.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know if my device has water damage?

Water damage can show up as visible moisture under the screen, a liquid detection alert (on iPhones), slow performance, unexpected shutdowns, or complete failure to power on. Sometimes the damage is invisible—you won't know until corrosion spreads weeks later. If your device has been exposed to water, bring it in for an assessment. Better to be safe.

Q: Can I repair water damage myself?

We strongly advise against it. Opening your device without the right tools, environment, and replacement parts can make the damage worse. Corrosion spreads when exposed to air, and if you don't have the proper soldering equipment, you'll damage components further. Bring it to a professional.

Q: Will my data be safe during water damage repair?

Yes. We don't wipe the storage during a water damage repair unless the storage chip itself is damaged (which is rare). Your files, photos, and applications remain intact. If data is at risk, we'll tell you before we start.

Q: How long does a water damage repair take?

Most repairs are completed within 5 to 7 working days. Simple cleaning takes 48 hours. Complex repairs with component replacement can take up to two weeks. We'll give you a precise estimate during your assessment.

Q: What warranty do you offer on water damage repairs?

We offer a 12-month warranty on the repair itself. For an additional fee, you can extend that to three years. The warranty covers the components we've repaired, not accidental damage or wear and tear after the repair.

Q: Is it worth repairing a water-damaged device, or should I just buy a new one?

In most cases, repair is far cheaper than replacement. A MacBook Air costs R8,000 to R15,000 new. A water damage repair typically runs R2,000 to R4,000. An iPhone 15 costs R12,000 to R18,000 new. A water damage repair on an iPhone runs R1,200 to R2,400. Unless your device is very old, repair is almost always the smarter choice.
