This post breaks down SSD upgrade pricing in Johannesburg, what factors affect your final bill, and why choosing the right service partner matters.

How Much Does an SSD Upgrade Cost in Johannesburg?

The honest answer is: it depends on your device, the storage capacity you want, and whether you're upgrading a repairable model.

At ZA Support, our assessment fee starts from R599. This covers diagnostics, checking whether your device is suitable for an SSD upgrade, and giving you a fixed quote before any work begins. We don't believe in hidden costs or surprises at collection.

For the actual upgrade, pricing typically breaks down as follows:

  • MacBook Air (2010-2017 models): R1,200-R2,800 labour + storage cost
  • MacBook Pro (2012-2015 retina models): R1,500-R3,200 labour + storage cost
  • Mac mini (2012-2018): R1,000-R2,500 labour + storage cost
  • iMac (2012-2017): R1,800-R3,500 labour + storage cost
  • Storage itself ranges from R800 (256GB budget SSDs) to R4,500 (1TB high-speed NVMe). Total job cost usually sits between R2,600 and R8,200 depending on your needs.

Why the variation? Newer models use proprietary soldered storage that cannot be upgraded. Some devices require partial disassembly of the logic board area, which takes longer and costs more. Older MacBook Pro models with user-accessible SATA drives are faster and cheaper. We'll be transparent about this during your assessment.

What Affects Your SSD Upgrade Price

Several factors influence the final quote you'll receive.

Device model and year. Newer MacBooks (2016 onwards) often use proprietary SSD formats that are harder to source and install. Older machines, particularly MacBook Pro models before 2016, are simpler and therefore cheaper to upgrade.

Storage capacity and speed. A 256GB upgrade costs less than a 1TB upgrade. If you need fast NVMe performance for video editing or 4K work, expect to pay more than for standard SATA speeds. We stock Samsung, Crucial, and Kingston options.

Current storage condition. If your existing drive is failing or corrupted, data recovery adds R800-R2,500 to the job. If the drive is simply full, the upgrade is straightforward.

Your location in Johannesburg. We're based in Hyde Park, so collection and delivery within the northern suburbs is included. If you're in Soweto or the far east, courier fees may apply.

Load shedding delays. We won't pretend this isn't a factor. Extended Stage 6 load shedding can slow our turnaround, though we maintain backup power for critical work.

    Turnaround Time and Warranty

Most SSD upgrades take 2-5 working days from drop-off to collection. Simple SATA upgrades on older MacBooks might be done in 24 hours. Complex logic board work takes longer.

All our SSD upgrades include a 3-year parts warranty on the storage device itself, plus 12 months labour warranty. If the new drive fails within three years, we replace it at no cost. This warranty is unique in Johannesburg and reflects our confidence in the hardware we install.

We'll also migrate your old data to the new drive where possible, which takes additional time but saves you weeks of re-installation headaches.

Why We're Different From Retail Chains

Big box retailers and online shops often quote only the drive cost, leaving you to find a technician. We quote the complete job. If your MacBook needs logic board work to support the new drive, we tell you upfront. If data recovery is needed, we include that in the assessment.

We've also worked on more than 24,000 Apple devices in the past eight years. That experience means we know which drive brands fail prematurely in Johannesburg's climate, which models have hidden compatibility issues, and how to handle the rare cases where an upgrade simply isn't feasible.

When an SSD Upgrade Is Worth It

If your Mac is between 3 and 8 years old and slowing down, an SSD upgrade often restores 80-90 per cent of its original speed. You'll notice faster boot times, quicker app launches, and smoother video editing.

It's usually worth the money if:

  • Your device was originally fitted with a mechanical hard drive
  • You use intensive software (Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, Resolve)
  • You're otherwise happy with the machine and just want it faster
  • You want to avoid the cost of replacing the entire device
  • We've also written detailed posts on logic board repair and liquid damage recovery, common issues that compound slow performance.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you upgrade any Mac?

No. Machines from 2016 onwards typically have storage soldered directly to the logic board, which cannot be upgraded. We'll confirm during your assessment whether your model is upgradeable.

Q: Will an SSD upgrade void my AppleCare?

No. Storage upgrades don't void AppleCare. However, we always recommend informing Apple if you've had the work done, as it affects warranty coverage for storage-related issues.

Q: What happens to my old drive?

We keep it safe in our workshop for 30 days after collection. You can request it back at no extra cost, or we can securely wipe and recycle it using certified data destruction methods.

Q: How much faster will my Mac feel?

Most users notice a 3-4ร— improvement in boot time and a 2-3ร— improvement in app launch times. File copying speeds improve dramatically if you were on a mechanical drive. Real-world gains depend on your workflow and RAM, but the difference is always noticeable.

Q: Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. For jobs over R3,500, we offer a 50/50 split: half on booking, half on collection. Contact us to arrange this before your assessment.

Q: Is there a warranty on the work?

Yes. All labour comes with a 12-month warranty, and the SSD itself carries a 3-year manufacturer warranty backed by us. If anything goes wrong, we fix it free of charge.
