We've fitted more than 18,000 SSDs across MacBooks, iMacs, and Mac minis at our Hyde Park workshop since 2015. In that time, we've learned what Johannesburg clients actually need to know before they book in. This post covers real costs, realistic timescales, and what separates a rushed job from a proper upgrade.

SSD Upgrade Costs in Johannesburg: The Real Numbers

Let's be direct. An SSD upgrade isn't cheap, but it's usually far cheaper than buying a new machine.

At ZA Support, our standard diagnostic and assessment starts at R599. We use this time to confirm that an SSD upgrade will genuinely solve your performance problem, not every slowdown is storage-related, and to identify the exact drive your machine needs.

The cost of the upgrade itself depends on three factors: your MacBook model, the storage capacity you want, and whether you're upgrading from a hard drive (older machines) or replacing a slower SSD.

Entry-level upgrades (256GB to 512GB on 2015-2017 models) typically run R2,800-R4,200 including the drive and labour. Mid-range upgrades (512GB to 1TB on 2018-2021 models) sit around R4,500-R6,800. High-capacity upgrades (1TB to 2TB on 2022+ models) can reach R7,500-R10,500. These prices assume the drive is user-replaceable or requires straightforward disassembly. Some newer MacBook Air and Pro models use soldered storage, which means an upgrade is impossible, something we identify during that R599 assessment.

Load shedding has also affected our pricing. Parts suppliers are absorbing higher logistics costs, and we've had to adjust our inventory strategy around stage 5 and 6 outages. We pass on reasonable increases to clients, but we've committed to holding prices stable until end of Q2 2026 for existing quote holders.

Why Not Buy the Drive Online and DIY?

We see this regularly. A client buys a Samsung 970 EVO or WD Blue SSD online for R800-R1,200, then discovers their 2017 MacBook Pro has a proprietary connector. Or they install the drive correctly but don't migrate their data properly, leaving them with a formatted drive and no way to recover their files.

In our workshop, we handle the entire process: we source the correct drive (often a Samsung PM981 or Transcend SSD specific to your model), back up your existing data, install the new drive, clone your operating system and applications across, and verify the installation with speed benchmarks. That full service, plus our guarantee, is what the labour cost covers.

We also keep stock of fifteen different SSD models for machines manufactured between 2013 and 2026. If you order online and the drive arrives faulty, which happens more often than people realise, you're in a replacement queue for weeks. We have spares ready.

Turnaround Time and Warranty

Most SSD upgrades are completed within 24 to 48 hours of you dropping your machine at our Hyde Park location. If you need it faster, we can often do same-day for an additional R400 rush fee, though this depends on our current job queue.

Every upgrade comes with a 3-year warranty on the drive and the installation work. If the SSD fails within three years, we replace it free of charge (excluding physical damage from accidents). Your data is covered by our standard data protection procedures under POPIA. We keep encrypted backups of cloned drives for 90 days after installation, in case you need to recover a file you deleted after the upgrade.

Common Questions About SSD Upgrades

One question we're asked constantly: will an SSD upgrade actually make my Mac faster? The answer is yes, with a serious caveat. If your machine has a damaged logic board or a failing fan, an SSD won't help. That's why we insist on the R599 assessment first. We've fixed over 22,000 devices in Johannesburg, and we know the difference between a storage bottleneck and a hardware fault.

Another: is an SSD upgrade worth it on an older MacBook? Generally, yes. A 2015 MacBook Pro with a new 1TB SSD will feel almost new again, applications will launch in seconds, file transfers will be instantaneous, and you'll get another three to four years of solid performance. However, if your machine is pre-2013, the CPU and RAM become the limiting factor, and the upgrade won't have the same dramatic effect.

If you're unsure whether an upgrade makes sense for your situation, we can walk you through it over the phone or during a free in-workshop consultation. If you'd like to discuss your specific machine, WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 or book online at zasupport.com/book.

When to Consider Other Repairs First

Before you book an SSD upgrade, rule out other common issues. If your Mac has suffered water damage, even minor exposure, the logic board might be compromised, and an SSD upgrade won't help. We handle liquid damage repair as part of our service. Likewise, if your screen is cracked or your keyboard is failing, prioritising those repairs alongside the SSD upgrade makes sense economically.

We've also noticed that machines with failing batteries often feel slower because macOS throttles CPU performance to preserve power. A battery replacement costs between R1,200 and R2,100 depending on the model. Combining that with an SSD upgrade is cost-effective, since we're already opening the machine.

Comparing ZA Support to Other Johannesburg Options

We're not the cheapest option in Johannesburg, we won't be. We stock genuine and premium aftermarket drives, we use proper cloning software (not disk utilities copy-paste), and we back every job with three-year warranties and POPIA-compliant data handling. Other workshops may quote R1,500-R2,000 less, but they often use unbranded SSDs or skip the data verification step.

In our experience, a R1,500 saving upfront costs clients five times that when a budget SSD fails six months later and they lose their files. We've had clients call us in tears because another workshop didn't create a backup before installing the new drive.

If you're comparing quotes, ask these questions: Does the quote include a backup? Is the drive genuine or aftermarket? What's the warranty period? Do they clone the OS or do you reinstall from scratch? If a workshop can't answer clearly, that's a red flag.

Getting Started

The first step is the R599 assessment. Bring your machine to our Hyde Park workshop in Johannesburg, or describe the issue over WhatsApp, and we'll confirm that an SSD upgrade is the right fix. From there, we'll discuss capacity, budget, and turnaround time, and you'll have a formal quote before any work begins.

There's no obligation after the assessment. You're not locked in. But we find that once clients understand what's slowing their machine down, they're ready to move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does an SSD upgrade take?

Most upgrades are finished within 24 to 48 hours. We handle data backup, drive installation, OS cloning, and verification testing before we call you. If you need same-day turnaround, we can usually arrange it for an additional R400 rush fee, depending on our current workload.

Q: Can I upgrade the SSD on my 2023 MacBook Air?

It depends. M2 and M3 MacBook Air models have storage soldered directly to the logic board, so the SSD cannot be upgraded. Older Air models (2017-2022) may be upgradeable depending on the exact year. This is exactly what we confirm during the R599 assessment, no surprises.

Q: What's the difference between Samsung and Transcend SSDs?

Both are reliable. Samsung drives tend to be slightly faster in real-world use and carry better brand recognition. Transcend drives are marginally cheaper and perform nearly identically for everyday tasks. We recommend Samsung for power users and Transcend for general use, but either will significantly speed up your machine. We'll advise based on your workflow during the assessment.

Q: Do you migrate my data automatically?

Yes. We back up your entire drive, install the new SSD, and clone your existing OS, applications, and files across. You'll turn on your machine and everything will be exactly as it was, just faster. We verify the clone with speed tests before we hand it back.

Q: Is there a warranty on the SSD?

Yes. Every SSD we install comes with a 3-year parts warranty covering manufacturing defects. If the drive fails during that period, we replace it at no charge. Labour on the replacement is also covered. This doesn't include physical damage from accidents or liquid exposure.

Q: Can you handle urgent upgrades during load shedding?

Yes. We have backup power at our Hyde Park workshop, so we can work through stage 5 and 6 outages. However, if load shedding is severe and widespread, our parts suppliers may have delays, which affects turnaround time. We'll confirm timing when you book, typically, load shedding adds 24 hours to standard turnaround.
