Spilled Coffee on a MacBook — What to Do

You've just watched your morning cappuccino slide across your keyboard. Your stomach drops. The screen flickers. Your MacBook — suddenly wet, possibly dying — is in your hands and you have seconds to .

We have seen over 18,000 MacBooks through our Hyde Park workshop in the past five years, and coffee spills remain one of the most preventable yet most damaging incidents we encounter. The difference between a device that survives with minimal cost and one that requires a £2,000 logic board replacement often comes down to what you do in the first three minutes.

The truth is simple: your speed and the type of liquid matter far more than the MacBook's supposed "water resistance." And here's what catches most people off guard — not all coffee is the same threat.

Why Coffee Is Worse Than Water

When you spill water on a MacBook, you're dealing with one problem: moisture conducting electricity across circuits. When you spill coffee with milk and sugar, you're introducing conductive residue that doesn't evaporate. The sugars caramelise as the device heats up. The proteins in milk corrode copper traces on the logic board. Even after the liquid dries, the damage continues at a microscopic level.

We have found that sweet, milky coffee causes four times the damage rate compared to black coffee or pure water. The cost difference is stark. A simple water-damage assessment in our Hyde Park workshop starts from R599, but logic board repair for sugar-laden coffee spills reaches R3,500 to R5,200.

Immediate Actions: The First Three Minutes

Power off immediately. Do not close the lid and hope. Do not try to save your work. Do not check if it still works. Press and hold the power button until the screen goes black, then hold it for another ten seconds. Your reflexive instinct to "just quickly save" will cost you more than the thirty seconds you save.

Disconnect everything. Remove the USB-C charging cable, any external drives, and any peripherals. These carry current into the device and accelerate corrosion. If your MacBook is plugged in, the spill creates a direct path for electricity to damage deeper circuits.

Tip the MacBook away from you. Gravity matters. Tilt the device so liquid runs away from the keyboard and the vents below the screen. Open it partially — about 30 degrees — and let gravity work. Do not shake it, do not tap it, do not turn it upside down.

Absorb visible liquid without pressure. Use a microfibre cloth — the one in your box, or any soft, lint-free cloth. Pat gently. Do not rub. Do not apply pressure. You are aiming to remove surface liquid only, not to drive the coffee deeper into the crevices.

Do not use heat. No hair dryers, no ovens, no radiators. Heat accelerates corrosion and can damage the display. Leave it open in a cool, dry room for a minimum of 48 hours. In Johannesburg's dry winter months, you have an advantage — humidity is low, and natural evaporation works well.

When to Bring Your MacBook to Our Workshop

If you spilled black coffee or water, and you acted within the first minute, you have a reasonable chance of avoiding logic board damage. You should still have the device assessed professionally. We have seen dozens of cases where owners assumed their MacBook was fine, only to return six months later with a dead device.

If you spilled milk coffee, cappuccino, latte, or any sweet drink — or if it has been more than two hours since the spill — do not delay. Bring it to our Hyde Park workshop or contact us online for guidance. Our standard liquid damage assessment is R599, and we can often save the device before corrosion spreads to the logic board.

If your MacBook has already stopped working, or if the keyboard is intermittently unresponsive, you may need liquid damage repair. This typically involves removing the logic board, ultrasonically cleaning it, replacing corroded components, and testing extensively. With our three-year warranty on most repair work, you can be confident the device will function reliably afterwards.

Prevention: The Simplest Solution

We have repaired more than 15,000 MacBooks with liquid damage, and we can tell you with absolute certainty that the cheapest repair is the one you prevent. Keep your coffee away from your workspace. Use a spill-proof travel mug with a sealed lid if you work in cafés. Invest in a keyboard cover — they are inexpensive and unobtrusive. Most importantly, establish a habit: coffee sits to your left, MacBook to your right, and never the two shall meet.

If your MacBook needs inspection after any liquid exposure, book online at zasupport.com/book or WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863. We can usually assess the damage within 24 hours and advise on repair costs and timescales.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is my MacBook definitely ruined if coffee spilled on it?

No. The device's survival depends entirely on three factors: the type of liquid (plain water is far less damaging than sweet coffee), how quickly you powered it off (within seconds is critical), and whether you resisted the urge to dry it with heat. We have recovered MacBooks that were soaked in black coffee, simply because the owner acted quickly and left it to dry naturally. You will not know the extent of damage until a technician inspects it properly.

Q: Can I dry my MacBook myself at home?

You can allow it to dry naturally in a cool, dry room — in Johannesburg's climate, 48 to 72 hours in normal room conditions is usually sufficient. Do not use heat sources, and do not seal it in a bag with rice or silica gel. Those methods trap moisture. Once it has dried, bring it to our workshop for a professional assessment. We will test the keyboard, trackpad, battery, and internal logic board to ensure no hidden corrosion is progressing.

Q: How much will it cost to repair liquid damage?

An initial assessment is R599. If only the keyboard needs replacement, the cost is typically R1,200 to R1,800 depending on your model. If the coffee reached the logic board and corrosion is present, repair costs range from R2,500 to R5,200. The exact price depends on what components need cleaning, testing, or replacement. We provide a full quote before any work begins.

Q: Should I try opening the MacBook myself to dry the inside?

No. Opening a modern MacBook requires specialised tools and knowledge of component layout. One misplaced screw or connector can cause thousands of rands in additional damage. Leave this to trained technicians. We have the ultrasonic cleaning equipment, microscopic inspection tools, and replacement parts to do this safely.

Q: Can I claim this under warranty or insurance?

Apple's standard warranty does not cover liquid damage — this is one of the few failures they explicitly exclude. If your MacBook is covered under accidental damage insurance, you may be eligible for a claim. Check your policy, and bring the documentation to our workshop. We will provide a detailed damage report to support your claim if needed.

Q: How long does liquid damage repair take?

A simple keyboard replacement takes 24 to 48 hours. If the logic board requires ultrasonic cleaning and component replacement, allow 5 to 7 working days. We prioritise urgent repairs and can often fit you in within 24 hours. All repairs come with a three-year parts warranty and a 12-month labour warranty, so you can return to us at no cost if an issue reappears within that period.
