MacBook Screen Repair in Johannesburg: Cracked, Black, or Flickering

Whether your MacBook screen is cracked, completely black, flickering, or showing lines -- this guide covers every display fault, what causes it, and what your repair options are in Johannesburg.

MacBook Display Problems: What Is Actually Wrong?

A MacBook display fault is one of the most alarming things that can happen to your machine -- especially when it happens mid-work with no warning. But not every black screen means a dead Mac, and not every cracked display requires a full screen assembly replacement.

Understanding what kind of fault you have is the first step to knowing what your repair will involve.

The Most Common MacBook Screen Faults

**Cracked or shattered display glass** -- Physical impact to the screen. The LCD panel beneath may or may not be damaged depending on the severity. On Retina models, the glass and LCD are fused -- damage to one typically means replacing the full assembly.

**Completely black screen** -- The Mac appears to be on (keyboard backlight, startup sound, fan spin) but the display shows nothing. This can be a failed display cable, a backlight fault, a GPU issue on the logic board, or a failed display panel. Diagnosis determines whether this is a display replacement or a logic board repair.

**Backlight failure (dark but visible)** -- You can faintly see the screen contents when you shine a light at it, but there is no illumination. The backlight LED strip or the backlight driver circuit on the logic board has failed. On many models this is repairable without a full screen replacement.

**Flickering or colour banding** -- The display flickers, shows horizontal or vertical lines, or has sections of colour distortion. This can be a failing display data cable, a failing LCD panel, or in some cases an early-stage logic board fault.

**Stage Light / Flexgate issue** -- Specific to certain 2016-2019 MacBook Pro models: a stage light pattern appears at the bottom of the screen, or the display only works when the lid is fully open. This is a known design flaw caused by the display backlight flex cable failing from repeated bending stress.

What Happens During a MacBook Screen Repair

**Step 1 -- Assessment: R899 ex VAT.** We test the Mac with an external monitor to determine whether the fault is in the display assembly, the display cable, or the logic board GPU. This distinction is critical -- a logic board GPU fault requires very different work to a display assembly replacement.

**Step 2 -- Component identification.** MacBook display assemblies are model-specific. We identify the exact part required before quoting.

**Step 3 -- Display assembly replacement.** On most Retina MacBook models, the display is replaced as a complete assembly -- glass, LCD panel, backlight, and front camera integrated. The assembly is carefully installed and tested for colour accuracy, brightness uniformity, and proper lid-close sensor function.

**Step 4 -- Cable repair where applicable.** On models affected by the Flexgate issue, the fault is in the display data cable rather than the panel itself. Cable replacement is significantly less expensive than a full assembly replacement.

**Step 5 -- Calibration and verification.** True Tone, Night Shift, and ProMotion display features are verified. We do not return a machine with display features disabled.

MacBook Models and Display Considerations

**MacBook Pro 2016-2019** -- These models are prone to the Flexgate display cable issue. If you see the stage light effect or lid-angle-dependent display failure, this is the cause. Check whether your serial is covered by Apple extended service programme before booking a repair.

**MacBook Pro M1 / M2 / M3 / M4 (2020 onwards)** -- Apple Silicon MacBooks have Liquid Retina XDR displays on Pro and Max models. These are high-quality but carry a premium replacement cost due to display technology.

**MacBook Air M1 / M2 / M3** -- The MacBook Air uses a thinner, lighter display assembly than the Pro line. Replacement assemblies are available.

**Intel MacBook Pro 13-inch (2012-2015)** -- Parts availability is good and replacement costs are lower than newer models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My MacBook fell and the screen cracked -- can it be repaired?

Yes. A cracked Retina display is repaired by replacing the full display assembly. On non-Retina models, it is sometimes possible to replace only the outer glass, but this is uncommon because the adhesion bond makes separation risky. We will assess which approach is appropriate for your model at no charge.

Q: My MacBook screen is black but I can hear it starting up -- is this a screen fault or something worse?

It could be either. The key test is to connect an external monitor via USB-C or HDMI. If the external monitor works, the fault is in the display assembly or cable -- typically a display repair. If the external monitor also shows nothing, the fault is on the logic board. We perform this test during the assessment fee (R899 ex VAT).

Q: Does ZA Support repair the 2016-2019 MacBook Pro Flexgate issue?

Yes. We replace the display backlight cable on affected models. Before proceeding, check whether your serial number qualifies for Apple extended service programme by entering it at apple.com/support.

Q: My MacBook display flickers when I move the lid -- is this the cable?

Almost certainly yes. Intermittent display faults that are position-sensitive are almost always caused by a failing display data cable running through the hinge. Cable replacement resolves this.

Q: Can I use my MacBook with a cracked screen while I wait for repair?

Yes, provided the crack has not compromised the LCD panel. If you can see screen contents clearly and the crack is only in the outer glass, it is generally safe to continue using the machine while you arrange a repair. If there are dead pixels, colour bleeding, or dark patches spreading from the crack, the LCD layer is damaged.

Q: How long does a MacBook screen replacement take?

Most repairs completed within 1-3 business days. We will confirm the timeline at assessment.

Q: My MacBook Pro 2019 screen is showing pink lines -- what is causing this?

On 2019 Intel MacBook Pro models, horizontal or vertical coloured lines are most commonly caused by a failing display data cable rather than a failed panel. This is a more cost-effective repair than a full assembly replacement. We will test with an external monitor during the assessment fee (R899 ex VAT) to confirm.
