MacBook Pro M4 Won't Turn On: Repair Guide for Melrose Clients

Your MacBook Pro M4 sits on the desk, unresponsive. You press the power button. Nothing. The screen remains black. No startup chime. No sign of life. If you're in Melrose or anywhere across Johannesbu.

We have handled this exact scenario over 18,000 times across our Hyde Park workshop. A MacBook that won't power on isn't always a write-off. In fact, most cases we see are repairable, and often the fix is straightforward once we've diagnosed the root cause.

This guide walks you through what causes an M4 to refuse startup, what you should (and shouldn't) try at home, and what to expect when you bring it in for professional repair.

Why Your MacBook Pro M4 Won't Turn On

The M4 chip in newer MacBook Pro models is robust, but the power delivery system that feeds it can fail in several ways. We've identified five primary culprits in our workshop:

Power Management IC failure. The small chip responsible for managing power distribution to the motherboard can short or degrade, especially after physical shock or thermal stress. This is the most common reason we see M4 units fail to boot.

Battery cell degradation. Unlike older models, newer M4 batteries are tightly integrated with the logic board. A failed battery cell prevents the system from supplying power to the CPU, even if the charger is functioning. We check this first because it's non-destructive to diagnose.

SMC (System Management Controller) corruption. The SMC oversees power sequencing. If its firmware becomes corrupted—rare, but possible after interrupted firmware updates—the Mac won't recognise the power button press.

Liquid ingress or corrosion. Johannesburg's humidity, combined with accidental spills, creates an environment where microscopic corrosion can spread across power rails on the logic board. Even a small amount of moisture near the power delivery zone stops the boot sequence dead.

Faulty USB-C power adapter. We test dozens of third-party chargers monthly. Many deliver insufficient wattage or have failed rectification circuits. Your M4 draws 96–140W depending on configuration. A 65W charger looks fine on the surface but won't wake the system.

What You Should Try Before Visiting Us

Don't open the device. Apple's M4 models are not user-serviceable, and attempting to disconnect or reseat components will void any remaining warranty and risk damaging connectors.

Force restart. Hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for ten seconds, then release. This resets the SMC without booting the OS. Try this three times, waiting 30 seconds between attempts.

Leave it charging. Connect the original Apple adapter (or a verified 140W USB-C power supply) and let it charge for 45 minutes. Occasionally, the battery is completely drained, and the system requires a minimum charge threshold before it will respond to power input.

Try a different power outlet. Test the charger on another USB-C device—an iPad, for example. If the charger works elsewhere, the problem is likely on your MacBook's side. If the charger fails to charge other devices, the adapter itself is faulty.

Check for visual signs of damage. Look closely at the charging port for bent pins, corrosion, or discolouration. Examine the edges of the chassis for cracks. If you see water damage indicators (those white or red strips inside the battery compartment), note them—this helps us diagnose faster.

If none of these steps restore power, the device needs professional assessment.

Our M4 Repair Process at ZA Support

When you bring your MacBook to our Hyde Park workshop, we follow a systematic diagnostic pathway.

Power-on test and adapter verification. We test your charger on our bench equipment and measure voltage and current draw. This eliminates adapter failure as a variable within the first five minutes. If the adapter is the problem, we can often resolve it on the day.

Battery health check and SMC reset. We connect diagnostic equipment that safely communicates with the battery management system without forcing power through potentially damaged rails. This tells us whether the battery is salvageable or if it's failed completely.

Thermal imaging and component-level inspection. We use infrared cameras to identify areas of heat concentration or cold spots on the logic board. This often pinpoints the exact failed chip or corroded trace.

Logic board micro-soldering if required. If a power management IC or supporting component has failed, we use micro-soldering equipment to replace it. This requires magnification, precision hand tools, and component-level knowledge. Our technicians have collectively repaired more than 15,000 Apple laptops at this level of repair.

Turnaround for straightforward power adapter replacement is same-day. Battery replacement typically takes 24–48 hours. Logic board micro-soldering may require 5–7 working days if we need to order a replacement component from our suppliers.

Cost and Warranty

Our initial diagnostic assessment costs R599 and is non-refundable but credited toward the repair cost if you proceed.

A replacement Apple power adapter (genuine) runs R1,800–R2,200 depending on wattage. If the adapter is the culprit, you'll know within 30 minutes of drop-off.

Battery replacement on M4 models costs R3,500–R4,200 because the battery and top case assembly must be replaced as a unit per Apple's design specification.

Logic board micro-soldering for a power management IC starts at R2,800 and can reach R5,500 if multiple components require replacement or if the board shows extensive corrosion damage that necessitates trace repair.

All repairs come with a three-year parts warranty on replaced components. We guarantee our micro-soldering work with the longest warranty in Johannesburg.

Liquid Damage and How We Handle It

If your M4 has been exposed to liquid, don't power it on—ever. Many clients make this mistake, thinking they'll "just check if it still works." Powering a wet logic board accelerates corrosion and shorts components that might otherwise be salvageable.

Our liquid damage assessment and repair service begins with complete disassembly in a controlled environment. We remove the logic board, dry it systematically, and inspect each power rail under magnification. Corrosion on power delivery traces requires micro-soldering repairs. Corroded connectors may need replacement. In severe cases where corrosion has spread across multiple layers of the board, repair becomes uneconomical, and we recommend replacement.

We process between 800 and 1,200 liquid damage cases annually at our workshop. Most are salvageable if the device reaches us within 48 hours of the incident.

Prevention and Long-Term Care

To avoid power-on failures in the future, keep your M4 in a dry environment. Melrose experiences seasonal humidity spikes; consider a small silica gel pack near your workspace during the rainy months. Use only Apple-certified or verified third-party USB-C chargers—knockoff adapters are common in Johannesburg's grey market and often deliver unstable power.

If you regularly travel between Johannesburg's suburbs or work outdoors near the Cradle, invest in a protective sleeve and keep your charger in a separate compartment to avoid crushing the connector.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I repair my M4 myself if it won't turn on?

No. Modern MacBook Pro models are not user-serviceable. The power management circuit is soldered directly to the logic board, and any attempt to disconnect or reflow components risks permanent damage. Additionally, opening the device voids your AppleCare+ coverage if you have it. Professional diagnosis and repair are always safer and more cost-effective than DIY attempts.

Q: How long does it take to repair an M4 that won't power on?

Diagnostic assessment takes 30–60 minutes. If the fault is a faulty charger, you'll leave with a replacement the same day. Battery replacement takes 24–48 hours. Logic board component replacement (micro-soldering) typically requires 5–7 working days. We communicate turnaround time after initial diagnosis and before beginning repairs.

Q: What if the repair costs more than the MacBook's value?

We provide transparent pricing before work begins. If a logic board replacement is required (as opposed to micro-soldering), the cost can exceed R8,000–R12,000 depending on M4 configuration. In such cases, we discuss options: repair versus replacement. Many clients choose repair because of data preservation and emotional attachment. We never force you into a repair you don't want.

Q: Is liquid damage to an M4 always irreparable?

No. If the device reaches our workshop within 48 hours of liquid exposure and before you attempt to power it on, we can often salvage it. Our liquid damage specialists use ultrasonic cleaning, component-level inspection, and micro-soldering to restore devices that most other repairers would scrap. Turnaround is longer (10–14 days) but success rates exceed 75%.

Q: Do you offer warranty on repairs?

Yes. All parts replaced under our repair service carry a three-year manufacturer or warranty-equivalent guarantee. Our micro-soldering work is guaranteed for three years against reflow failure or cold joints. If a repaired component fails within this period due to our workmanship, we repair or replace it at no cost.

Q: Can you recover data from an M4 that won't turn on?

Yes. Even if the logic board is damaged beyond repair, we can often extract the storage by accessing the SSD directly using specialised equipment. This costs R1,200–R1,800 depending on the amount of data and the condition of the storage module. Data recovery is separate from power-on repair and adds 3–5 working days to turnaround.
