A logic board failure can feel like the end of the road for your machine. But at ZA Support, we've repaired over 15,000 Apple devices in Johannesburg, and we know that most M4 logic board issues are fixable. The cost varies, turnaround is measured in days not weeks, and the relief when your machine boots up again is real.

This guide walks you through what logic board failure looks like, why it happens, what repair costs, and how we handle it here in Hyde Park.

Understanding MacBook Pro M4 Logic Board Failures

The logic board is the integrated circuit that controls every function of your MacBook Pro. Unlike older models, the M4 board is largely soldered, components are fused to the board rather than plugged in. That's why it's so powerful and so risky.

We've diagnosed logic board failure in MacBook Pro M4 units that came in with thermal damage, liquid exposure, and power surges. Some were caused by physical drops. Others simply failed after years of use. The symptoms overlap, which is why proper diagnosis matters.

If your M4 won't charge, won't boot, shows a black screen, or restarts unexpectedly, the logic board is usually involved. But not every power issue is a board failure. That's where our R599 diagnostic assessment comes in. We run it through our bench and isolate the fault. You'll know exactly what's wrong and what it costs to fix before we touch a soldering iron.

Why M4 Logic Boards Fail

The Apple M4 chip generates significant heat. Inside the MacBook Pro chassis, that heat needs to dissipate through copper heat pipes and thermal paste. When thermal paste dries out, which happens faster in Johannesburg's heat and humidity, the chip temperature climbs. Sustained high temperatures can cause micro-fractures in solder joints between the chip and the board.

Liquid damage is the second major culprit. A spill into the keyboard, rain exposure, or even high humidity in load-shedding season can seep into the logic board. Water and electronics don't coexist. Corrosion starts within hours.

We've also seen M4 boards fail after electrical surges, particularly during Johannesburg's unpredictable power cuts. A surge through the charging port can fry components on the logic board instantly.

Third-party repairs sometimes cause logic board damage too. We've received M4 units that were opened with the wrong tools, or reassembled with loose connectors. Preventive care beats emergency repair every time.

MacBook Pro M4 Logic Board Repair: Process and Turnaround

Here's how we handle it at ZA Support.

Diagnosis. We start with a full assessment. Your M4 goes on our bench, and we run power delivery tests, check for corrosion under a microscope, and test the T2 security chip and power management circuits. If the fault is a solder joint, we identify which one. If it's a corroded capacitor, we find it. This takes 24 to 48 hours and costs R599. You'll get a written report and a fixed price quote.

Repair. Once you approve the quote, our technicians go to work. We use micro-soldering equipment to repair broken connections, replace corroded components, or in some cases, reball the M4 chip itself (removing and reinstalling the entire processor with fresh solder). We work under magnification, with precision tools, and we test every step.

Turnaround for most M4 logic board repairs is 5 to 10 working days. Complex cases, or those requiring component sourcing, may take two weeks. We'll give you a realistic date upfront.

Testing. Once repaired, the board goes back into the chassis, and we run a full suite of tests: power cycling, memory checks, thermal monitoring, and a clean macOS install. Your M4 has to pass every single test before it leaves our workshop.

We offer a 3-year warranty on parts and labour for logic board repairs. If the same fault recurs within that period, we fix it again at no charge. That's the guarantee we stand behind.

Cost of M4 Logic Board Repair in Johannesburg

Logic board repair pricing depends on what's broken.

A simple solder joint repair or a single corroded component replacement typically runs R2,800 to R4,200. These are surface-level faults, quick to identify and fix.

A reball of the M4 chip, where we remove and resolder the entire processor, costs R5,500 to R7,800. This is more involved, takes longer, and requires precision equipment.

Liquid damage repairs are unpredictable. Some boards need only component replacement (R3,500 to R5,200). Others have widespread corrosion and require multiple repairs (R6,500 to R9,500).

These prices include our R599 diagnostic fee. If you proceed with the repair, we credit that back to your invoice.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing? If your M4 is less than four years old and the repair cost is below 40 per cent of a replacement machine, repair makes financial sense. For machines over five years, you might consider your options, but most clients find repair to be the better path forward.

When to Repair vs. Replace

We're honest about this. Some M4 units are worth repairing; others aren't.

Repair makes sense if:

  • Your M4 is under five years old.
  • The repair cost is under R8,000.
  • You have data on the drive you want recovered.
  • The machine otherwise functions (no cracked screen, undamaged chassis).
  • Consider replacement if:

  • The M4 is over six years old and the repair exceeds R10,000.
  • Multiple boards or components have failed (sign of systemic damage).
  • The chassis is physically damaged beyond the logic board issue.
  • We'll advise you honestly. Call us, and we'll talk through your specific machine and situation.

    How ZA Support Differs

We're based in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, and we've been repairing Apple devices since the Intel MacBook era. We've moved to M-series repairs as they've arrived, M1, M2, M3, and now M4. We've repaired more than 15,000 Apple devices, and we know these machines inside out.

We don't use aftermarket parts when originals are available. We don't rush diagnostics. We don't charge surprise fees. And we explain what's wrong in English, not jargon.

Our workshop is equipped with micro-soldering stations, thermal imaging cameras, and the diagnostic tools Apple uses. We're not a general tech shop that dabbles in Mac repair. We're Apple specialists.

We also handle related issues: logic board repair, liquid damage recovery, and routine maintenance. If your M4 has suffered thermal stress, liquid exposure, or power damage, we can help.

    Getting Your M4 Assessed

Start with a diagnostic appointment. Book online at zasupport.com/book, or WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 with your model number and symptoms.

Bring your M4 to our Hyde Park workshop, or describe the issue over WhatsApp and we'll advise on next steps. The R599 diagnostic fee gets you a full report and a fixed repair quote within 24 hours.

For urgent cases, we offer same-day assessment if you drop the machine off before 2 p.m. on weekdays.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does M4 logic board repair take?

Most repairs take 5 to 10 working days from approval to completion. Simple component replacements might finish in 3 to 5 days. Complex reball or multi-component repairs can take two weeks. We'll give you a realistic timeline when you approve the quote.

Q: Is logic board repair cheaper than a new MacBook Pro M4?

Almost always. A new M4 MacBook Pro starts around R35,000. Logic board repair typically costs R2,800 to R9,500. Even with diagnostics, you're looking at a fraction of replacement cost. If your machine is under five years old, repair is the sensible choice.

Q: Will my data be safe during repair?

Yes. We don't erase your drive unless specifically requested. If your machine won't boot, we can sometimes recover data before repair. Ask us about data recovery options during your diagnostic visit.

    Q: Can I repair a liquid-damaged M4 myself?

No. Liquid damage requires microscopic inspection, precise component replacement, and testing under load. DIY attempts usually cause more damage. Bring it to us, and we'll assess whether recovery is possible.

Q: What warranty comes with the repair?

We offer a 3-year warranty on parts and labour. If the same fault recurs, we fix it again at no charge. This covers the specific issue we repaired, not unrelated failures.

Q: Do you repair M4 logic boards with load-shedding damage?

Yes. We've repaired dozens of M4s that were damaged by power surges during load-shedding. Bring it in for diagnosis. Most surge damage is repairable if the machine didn't overheat during the event.
