MacBook Pro 16-Inch Logic Board Repair in Johannesburg | From R5,999

MacBook Pro 16-inch logic board repair in Johannesburg from R5,999. Intel and Apple Silicon models. GPU failures, liquid damage, thermal faults. Expert micro-soldering at our Hyde Park workshop, from R599 assessment.

The MacBook Pro 16-inch is Apple's most powerful laptop. It is the machine that video editors, architects, software developers, and data scientists reach for when they need maximum sustained performance in a portable form factor. It is also, when the logic board fails, one of the most expensive Apple devices to replace. At ZA Support in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, we repair these boards β€” saving our clients tens of thousands of rands compared to a full device replacement.

We have worked on more than 14,000 Apple devices in our Hyde Park workshop, including a significant number of 16-inch MacBook Pros across the Intel (2019), M1 Max (2021), M2 Max (2023), and M3 Max (2023) generations. Each generation has its own characteristic fault pattern, and knowing what to look for makes diagnosis faster and more accurate.

Intel 2019 Models: The GPU Failure Pattern

The 2019 MacBook Pro 16-inch (with Intel i7 or i9 and AMD Radeon Pro 5300M or 5500M discrete GPU) has a well-documented vulnerability. The AMD GPU uses a separate chip connected to the logic board via an interposer, and under high sustained GPU load β€” 3D rendering, external 4K displays, intensive video export β€” thermal cycling causes micro-fractures in the solder joints beneath the GPU die.

The symptoms are distinctive: coloured artefacts on screen, random shutdowns under load, a machine that boots only in safe mode (which disables the discrete GPU and falls back to Intel integrated graphics), or a black screen on startup with a working backlight.

We repair these boards using logic board repair micro-soldering techniques. We reflow the GPU, replace failed capacitors in the power delivery network, and apply high-quality thermal compound to reduce future thermal stress. In cases where the GPU die itself is damaged, we source tested replacement chips from verified suppliers.

Apple Silicon Models: Thermal and Power Delivery Faults

The M1 Max, M2 Max, and M3 Max chips in later 16-inch models are unified architecture β€” processor, GPU, and memory on a single die. The 16-inch chassis provides the largest heatsink and the most aggressive dual-fan system Apple uses in any MacBook, which means these machines handle sustained loads better than any other Apple laptop.

However, the sheer power consumption of a fully loaded M2 Max or M3 Max β€” up to 140W at peak β€” places significant stress on the power delivery network. We see faults in the following areas:

The primary power management IC (PMIC) can fail after extended high-load operation, particularly if the machine has been run on a desk without adequate airflow (for example, sitting on a padded surface that blocks the bottom vents). The symptom is typically a machine that charges but will not power on, or powers on and immediately shuts down.

Unified memory faults β€” where the LPDDR5X RAM integrated into the SoC becomes partially corrupted β€” can present as random kernel panics, a machine that passes Apple Diagnostics but fails under memory-intensive workloads, or an extremely slow boot with repeated memory remapping errors.

For liquid damage on these models, the most common ingress points are the keyboard assembly, the MagSafe port, and the left-side USB-C cluster. We handle all these repair types β€” for an overview of liquid damage procedure, see our liquid damage service.

Repair Costs and What to Expect

MacBook Pro 16-inch logic board repairs at ZA Support range from R5,999 for single-component faults (a failed MOSFET or power controller IC) to R12,000 for complex multi-point failures or cases requiring chip-level component sourcing.

Compare this to the Apple Store or authorised reseller cost for a board replacement: typically R30,000 to R70,000 depending on model year and configuration. In most cases, your data also stays intact with our repair β€” something a full board swap cannot guarantee if the replacement unit has a different SSD.

Every repair starts with a R599 assessment. This covers microscope inspection, targeted diagnostics, a written fault report, and a fixed-price quote. The R599 is deducted from your repair cost if you proceed.

Approved repairs carry an up to 3-year warranty on the specific fault addressed. We provide this in writing, and it covers both parts and labour.

Why Micro-Soldering Is the Right Approach

The 16-inch MacBook Pro logic board is a 12-layer PCB with components in the 0201 package size β€” roughly 0.6mm by 0.3mm. Replacing or repairing a component at this scale requires optical magnification, temperature-controlled hot-air stations, and precise flux application. It is not a job for general electronics workshops.

Our technicians have completed hundreds of these board-level repairs and use the same tooling found in professional board repair facilities internationally. We do not outsource to third parties β€” every repair is done in our Hyde Park workshop.

Johannesburg Clients: We Come to You

Our Hyde Park location is 10 minutes from Sandton, 8 minutes from Rosebank, and 15 minutes from Fourways. We also offer a courier collection service for clients across Johannesburg who cannot travel to us.

Corporate clients β€” particularly in finance and professional services β€” can arrange a same-day collection from their Sandton or Rosebank offices. We return repaired devices within the agreed timeframe and provide a written service record for IT asset management purposes. For more information, visit our contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common fault on the MacBook Pro 16-inch Intel models?

GPU failure due to thermal stress on the AMD Radeon solder joints. We see this on 2019 16-inch units that have been used for sustained 3D or video rendering work. The repair involves reflowing the GPU and addressing the power delivery components.

Can you repair an M2 Max or M3 Max board?

Yes. These are more complex repairs due to the unified architecture, but we diagnose and repair power delivery faults, PMIC failures, and liquid damage on all Apple Silicon 16-inch models.

How much does a MacBook Pro 16-inch logic board repair cost?

From R5,999 for isolated faults. Complex repairs range up to R12,000. We provide a fixed-price quote after the R599 assessment β€” no hidden costs.

Do I lose my data during the repair?

In almost all cases, no. We repair the board, not the storage. Your files remain on the embedded SSD throughout the repair process.

How long does the repair take?

Typically three to five working days. We will confirm the timeline when we give you the repair quote.

What warranty do you offer?

An up to 3-year warranty on the specific fault repaired, provided in writing. This covers parts and labour for a repeat of the same fault within the warranty period.

WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 to discuss your fault, or book at zasupport.com/book to arrange your R599 assessment at our Hyde Park workshop.
