A swollen MacBook battery is not a cosmetic issue. It's a fire risk that demands immediate attention. If your MacBook's trackpad is lifting, the keyboard feels spongy, or you've noticed the chassis bulging, your battery has failed internally and is expanding. At ZA Support, we've handled hundreds of swollen battery cases across Sandton, Rosebank, and Hyde Park. We know the urgency, the risk, and the right fix.

This guide explains what causes MacBook battery swelling, why it's dangerous, how we replace it safely, and what to expect from start to finish.

What Causes a MacBook Battery to Swell?

Lithium-ion batteries age. Inside your MacBook, the battery has multiple cells stacked in parallel. Each cell stores electrical charge separated by a chemical separator. When this separator degrades—through age, heat, manufacturing defect, or excessive charge cycles—the anode and cathode can contact each other. This triggers a chemical reaction that produces gas.

The battery puffed up over weeks or months. You didn't drop it. You didn't spill on it. The battery simply reached end-of-life and failed chemically. This happens to MacBooks aged 3–7 years, especially models that spent time in hot rooms or were left charging overnight repeatedly.

In our Hyde Park workshop, we've seen this across MacBook Air (2013–2017 models), MacBook Pro (13-inch and 15-inch), and newer 14-inch and 16-inch Pro models. The newer the machine, the less common it is—but it still happens.

Why is it dangerous? A swollen battery can rupture internally or catch fire if the cell voltage rises uncontrolled. Once rupture begins, it can escalate rapidly, especially under pressure. Your MacBook sitting in a closed bag or under your arm creates pressure. The risk is real.

Signs Your MacBook Battery Is Swollen

  • Trackpad lifts visibly from the case or feels springy
  • Keyboard is raised or spongy to the touch, especially near the space bar
  • Chassis bulges noticeably at the bottom
  • The machine won't close properly; the lid gap increases
  • Battery health reads 1% or "Service Recommended" in System Preferences
  • The machine feels warm even at rest
  • If you see any of these, stop using your MacBook. Do not charge it further. Do not leave it plugged in. Contact us immediately on WhatsApp: 064 529 5863 or book online at zasupport.com/book.

Our Swollen MacBook Battery Replacement Process

    Assessment and Safety (from R599)

We start with a physical inspection and full diagnostic. Our technician will:

  • Open the MacBook safely using proper anti-static procedures
  • Inspect the battery for visible deformation, cell separation, or leakage
  • Test the power rails and charging circuit to rule out faults upstream
  • Check the trackpad, keyboard, and chassis for permanent damage
  • This takes 30–45 minutes. We charge from R599 for the assessment. If we proceed with replacement, the assessment fee applies toward the final bill.

    Safe Removal

A swollen battery cannot be yanked out. Our process:

  • Discharge any residual charge safely
  • Disconnect the battery cable from the logic board
  • Remove adhesive strips holding the battery in place (this is time-consuming—cheap shops skip this and crack batteries, creating real fire hazard)
  • Lift the battery carefully to avoid puncture or rupture
  • Inspect the interior for thermal damage or corrosion
  • If we discover water damage or burnt components, we'll refer you to our logic board repair service or recommend a full unit assessment.

    Battery Replacement and Testing

We fit an OEM-equivalent lithium-ion battery matched to your MacBook model:

  • MacBook Air (M1/M2): 49.9 Wh battery, from R1,499
  • MacBook Pro 13-inch (M2): 52.0 Wh battery, from R1,599
  • MacBook Pro 16-inch (M1 Pro/Max): 99.6 Wh battery, from R2,199
  • We reconnect the battery cable, apply fresh adhesive, and close the case. Then we:

  • Charge the battery to 100% whilst monitoring voltage and temperature
  • Run System Information to confirm battery health reads 100%
  • Test trackpad, keyboard, and thermal sensors
  • Verify the device closes flush with no bulging
  • Turnaround in Sandton: 1–2 working days (same-day if you drop off before 11:00).

    Warranty and Aftercare

All battery replacements come with up to 3-year warranty covering manufacturing defect. If your battery fails within the warranty period, we replace it free.

We also offer No Fix No Fee: if we diagnose a fault but you decide not to proceed, you pay only the assessment cost.

    After replacement, we recommend:

  • Keep your MacBook away from extreme heat
  • Avoid leaving it plugged in overnight repeatedly
  • Update macOS—Apple regularly improves power management
  • If you experience liquid damage, have it assessed quickly; water can degrade the battery faster

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will a swollen battery damage my MacBook permanently?

In most cases, no. A swollen battery pushes on the trackpad and keyboard, but the logic board, screen, and case usually survive intact. However, if the battery ruptures internally, it can cause thermal damage to nearby components. This is rare but possible. Early replacement prevents this entirely.

Q: Can I repair a swollen battery myself?

Absolutely not. Lithium-ion batteries can rupture, catch fire, or release toxic gas if handled incorrectly. You need proper tools, anti-static equipment, and experience. The risk of injury or property damage is too high. Bring it to a professional workshop.

Q: How much does swollen battery replacement cost in Sandton?

From R1,499 for a MacBook Air to R2,199 for a MacBook Pro 16-inch, plus R599 for assessment. Prices include labour and 3-year warranty. We'll give you a fixed quote after diagnosis.

Q: How long does replacement take?

Usually 1–2 working days in Sandton. If you drop off before 11:00 and the battery is in stock, we often complete it same-day. We'll confirm turnaround when you book.

Q: Is a refurbished or third-party battery safe?

We recommend OEM-equivalent batteries only. Third-party batteries may work, but they often have poorer thermal management and shorter lifespan. We stock genuine replacements and guarantee them. It's worth the extra cost.

Q: What if my MacBook won't turn on after battery replacement?

This is extremely rare if the replacement is done correctly. If it happens, we'll diagnose the logic board at no extra charge. Most often, it's a loose cable—a 5-minute fix. You're covered by our 3-year warranty.
