Liquid Damage Repair in Parkhurst: What to Do When Your Apple Device Gets Wet

Water, coffee, juice, and rain don't discriminate. In our Hyde Park workshop, we've repaired more than 18,000 liquid-damaged Apple devices over the past eight years, and we can tell you with certainty.

This guide explains what liquid damage actually does to your MacBook, iPhone, or iPad; what you should do immediately after an incident; what repair costs look like; and how we approach diagnosis and restoration at ZA Support.

What Liquid Damage Actually Does to Apple Devices

When liquid enters an Apple device—whether it's a MacBook Pro, iPad Air, or iPhone 14—the damage is rarely about the water itself. Modern electronics are partly water-resistant by design. The real culprit is corrosion.

Inside your device, there are trace amounts of minerals, salts, and conductive particles in that liquid. Once the liquid dries, these particles remain. They bond to circuit board traces, shorting components or creating resistance where it shouldn't exist. A logic board might power on initially, then shut down under load because current paths have degraded. A trackpad might become unresponsive. Battery connectors might corrode, preventing charge detection.

We've seen this pattern hundreds of times: a client tells us, "It worked for three days after I spilled coffee on it, then just died." That's corrosion progressing silently.

Liquid also damages connectors—the tiny pins that link your display to the motherboard, or your keyboard to the main logic board. Even after cleaning, these connectors often become intermittently unreliable. That's why we always recommend full replacement of affected flex cables, not just cleaning.

Immediate Steps: The First Hour Matters

If you've just exposed your Apple device to liquid, here's exactly what to do.

Power it off immediately. Don't try to restart it to check if it still works. Don't plug it into power. Electricity flowing through wet circuitry accelerates corrosion. Turn it off or, if it's already off, leave it off.

Disconnect external devices. Unplug any USB-C cables, power adapters, or peripherals.

Pat it dry with a soft cloth. Use lint-free microfibre—the kind that came with your MacBook, if you have it. Don't use tissues or kitchen roll; they shed fibres that get trapped inside.

Don't use heat. This is crucial. Many guides recommend hair dryers or ovens. Don't. Heat accelerates corrosion and can damage solder joints on the logic board. Leave the device in a cool, dry place. If you're in Parkhurst during summer load shedding, store it indoors, not in direct sunlight.

Get it to a technician within 24 hours. Every hour you wait, corrosion progresses. Our Johannesburg workshop can begin cleaning and diagnosis within hours if you bring the device to us in Hyde Park.

Diagnosis: How We Assess the Damage

When you bring your device in for liquid damage repair, we begin with a comprehensive assessment. This costs R599 and takes about an hour.

First, we perform a visual inspection under magnification. We're looking for mineral residue on the logic board, discoloured components, or swelling around the battery. For MacBooks, we'll remove the bottom case. For iPhones, we'll carefully disassemble the device and inspect the display connector, battery connector, and charging port.

Next, we test power delivery. Does the device respond to the charger? Is there any visible shorting—any burning smell or heat? We use a specialist power supply that limits current, so we can safely test without causing further damage.

Then we clean. Using isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and ultrasonic cleaning baths, we remove mineral deposits from affected areas. This step alone recovers function in about 40% of cases we see.

Finally, we perform a full functionality test: screen responsiveness, keyboard input, port recognition, battery charging, and thermal performance under load. Only after passing every test do we return a device.

All of this is part of the R599 assessment. If repair is needed beyond cleaning, we provide a detailed quote before proceeding.

Repair Costs and Turnaround

Costs for liquid damage repair in Parkhurst vary by device and severity.

Light damage (corrosion limited to one connector or area, full function recovers after cleaning): R599 assessment + R1,200–R2,800 parts and labour.

Moderate damage (multiple components affected, flex cables or power delivery circuit degraded): R599 assessment + R3,500–R7,200.

Severe damage (logic board extensively corroded, battery swelling, multiple component failures): R599 assessment + R8,500–R15,000, or we may recommend against repair if the cost approaches device replacement value.

Turnaround is typically 3–5 working days from assessment completion, assuming parts are in stock. For less common models, we occasionally need to source components from our suppliers, which can extend turnaround to 7–10 days.

All repairs come with a three-year warranty on parts and labour. If a repaired component fails within three years, we repair it at no charge.

Why You Should Choose ZA Support for Liquid Damage Repair

We're located in Hyde Park, accessible from Parkhurst and across northern Johannesburg. Our technicians are Apple-trained and have handled liquid damage repair on every model from the original MacBook Air to the latest M-series Macs, every iPhone generation back to the iPhone 5, and iPad models across all lines.

We don't use aggressive methods like rice or heat. We don't guess at which components are damaged. Every repair is backed by diagnostic clarity and genuine Apple-compatible parts.

Because we specialise in liquid damage—and see it constantly during Johannesburg's rainy season and load-shedding-related home office incidents—we've developed rapid diagnosis workflows. When you bring your device to us, we prioritise it. You'll have answers within 24 hours and a clear repair path forward.

And because we understand Parkhurst clients, we're transparent about cost. There are no hidden charges. We show you the corrosion, explain what it means, and give you an honest quote before any repair begins.

Preventing Liquid Damage (And Why Prevention Still Fails)

The obvious advice: keep liquids away from your devices. Use protective cases for laptops. Don't work near water.

But we also know life happens. Parkhurst homes are affected by power cuts; clients work by candlelight near water glasses. Children spill juice. Summer thunderstorms flood offices. Even the most careful user eventually faces a liquid accident.

That's why backup discipline matters. Cloud backups through iCloud or Time Machine mean that even if your device is severely damaged, your data is safe. And regular backups mean a damaged device doesn't become a data-loss crisis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use rice to dry out my liquid-damaged Apple device?

No. Rice doesn't remove mineral deposits left behind by liquid exposure—it only masks moisture. Corrosion continues under the rice while you wait, often causing more damage. The faster approach is to bring your device to a technician for ultrasonic cleaning and proper diagnosis. We've seen many devices arrive at our Hyde Park workshop already degraded because clients waited days while attempting the rice method.

Q: How much does liquid damage repair cost at ZA Support?

Costs range from R599 for assessment alone (if only minor cleaning is needed) up to R15,000 for severe multi-component repairs. Most jobs fall between R2,500 and R7,500. We provide a detailed quote after assessment and only proceed with your approval. No surprise charges.

Q: Will my warranty cover liquid damage?

Apple's standard warranty does not cover liquid damage. However, if your device has AppleCare+, accidental damage coverage (including liquid exposure) is included, though you'll pay an incident deductible—typically R1,800–R3,500 depending on the device. We can work alongside AppleCare claims if you choose that route.

Q: How long does liquid damage repair take?

Assessment takes about one hour. Once we've identified what needs repair, turnaround is typically 3–5 working days for parts and labour. Urgent repairs where we have stock can sometimes be completed within 24 hours. We'll give you an exact timeline once we've assessed your device.

Q: Is my data safe if I bring my device for liquid damage repair?

Yes. We don't erase or reset devices during repair unless the storage is physically damaged (very rare). If data recovery is necessary, we handle it separately with transparent pricing. Always back up your device to iCloud or Time Machine before an accident occurs—it's the best insurance.

Q: Why should I choose ZA Support over an Apple Store?

Apple Stores in Johannesburg often replace entire logic boards rather than targeted repair, which costs more and takes longer. We diagnose precisely, repair components selectively, and offer faster turnaround because we specialise in damage repair. Our three-year warranty on all repairs also exceeds Apple's standard coverage. For Parkhurst residents, we're also closer and more flexible with appointments.
