Water damage to your MacBook, iPhone, or iPad can feel like a disaster. You've spilled coffee on your keyboard, rain has soaked your bag, or condensation has crept into your charging port. Your first question is usually the same: how much will this cost me, and how quickly can it be fixed?

In our Hyde Park workshop, we've handled more than 18,000 liquid-damaged Apple devices over the past eight years. The cost of repair varies widely, from R599 for a diagnostic assessment to several thousand rand for board-level work. This guide explains what drives those costs, what to expect during the repair process, and why timing matters. Every figure below is a starting price, and the final price is confirmed only after we assess your device, because the model, the fault, and the parts involved all change the work.

What Actually Happens When Liquid Damages Your Device

Liquid damage isn't always catastrophic. A small spill on a MacBook keyboard might only affect the keyboard assembly. The same spill on an iPhone can corrode the logic board if left untreated for hours or days.

When liquid enters your device, it causes oxidation and short circuits. Battery contacts corrode. Capacitors leak. If power is applied while the device is wet, the damage accelerates dramatically. That's why our first instruction to every client is: switch it off immediately and do not attempt to charge it.

The location of the liquid matters too. A splash on the case is far less serious than liquid reaching the logic board. On MacBooks, the liquid often flows downward through the keyboard assembly toward the trackpad and logic board. On iPhones, water can seep through the speaker grille or charging port.

Apple's official stance is that liquid damage is not covered by the standard warranty, even on devices with an IP68 rating. This is where third-party specialists like us come in.

Liquid Damage Repair Costs in Johannesburg: The Breakdown

Our assessment fee is R599, and it includes a full inspection under magnification, testing of all ports and buttons, and a written quote. The figures below are starting prices, confirmed for your specific model once we have the device in front of us.

Charging port repair or replacement (MacBook, iPad, iPhone): from R1,200. Liquid often reaches the charging port first. Where the spill has also damaged a MacBook keyboard assembly, we quote that separately after assessment, because it varies by model.

Battery replacement (after liquid exposure): from R1,200 for iPhone and iPad, from R2,500 for MacBook. If liquid has reached the battery connectors, we replace the battery entirely rather than risk corrosion causing failure months later.

Logic board repair: from R3,000 for component-level micro-soldering, where we remove corroded components and repair the board, preserving your original logic board. Full logic board replacement: from R3,500. Newer devices with more tightly integrated boards sit at the upper end of that range, which we confirm after assessment. A genuine Apple board replacement can run to many times the cost of a micro-soldering repair, which is why we always try to repair before we replace.

Our pricing sits comfortably below Apple's mail-in repair costs for liquid-damaged devices, which Apple classifies as accidental damage not covered by warranty.

Turnaround Time for Liquid Damage Repairs

Speed matters with liquid damage. The sooner you bring the device in, the higher the recovery rate. A device brought to us within 24 hours of the spill fares markedly better than one left for a week, because corrosion continues invisibly the whole time.

A charging port or battery replacement takes 2 to 3 business days. Logic board micro-soldering takes 4 to 6 business days, as we must carefully remove components, clean the board with specialist solvents, and test each section under a microscope. These are indicative timings, and you will have a confirmed lead time once we have assessed your machine.

If you're in Johannesburg and your device cannot wait, we offer an express service. We can often complete a port or battery replacement within 24 hours if you book first thing in the morning.

Why Turnaround Times Vary

Load shedding in Johannesburg does affect our repair schedule. When stage 5 or 6 cuts power to Hyde Park, we pause micro-soldering work, because the equipment requires stable power. We compensate by working extended hours on non-cut days, but it's honest to say your repair may take an extra day or two if Eskom cuts power mid-job.

We also prioritise devices that came in wet. If your MacBook is still damp, we place it in a controlled dry environment and may need to wait 48 hours before opening it. Rushing that step increases the risk of hidden corrosion activating when power is restored.

Prevention: Worth More Than Cure

Before you need a liquid damage repair, invest in protection. A quality laptop sleeve is inexpensive and genuinely reduces risk. iPhone cases with raised bezels protect the charging port and speaker grilles. For MacBook users in rainy Johannesburg winters, a keyboard cover is a sensible, low-cost precaution.

If you work near water, coffee shops, restaurants, client sites near the Jukskei, keep your device in a separate bag or on a stable surface away from the edge.

Read Apple's water resistance ratings carefully. An iPhone 15 Pro carries an IP68 rating, which Apple describes as up to 6 metres for up to 30 minutes in fresh water. It is not rated for saltwater, hot water, or any liquid other than fresh water. Juice, coffee, and wine are not covered by that rating, and the seals degrade with age and damage.

Our Warranty on Liquid Damage Repairs

We offer a 12-month parts warranty on all logic board micro-soldering repairs and a 36-month parts warranty on full board replacements. This covers component failure, not further liquid exposure.

If you bring a device back within 30 days of collection and the same symptom recurs, we repair it free. This protects you against incomplete first diagnostics, though this is rare.

We also recommend a follow-up inspection after 6 months. Sometimes micro-corrosion reveals itself later, and we catch it before it causes failure.

How to Get a Quote

WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 with clear photos of the damage and a description of what happened. We'll tell you whether it's worth bringing in or if the device is beyond economic repair.

You can also book online at zasupport.com/book to reserve an assessment slot. We're open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at our Hyde Park workshop.

For more detailed information on liquid damage symptoms and what to expect, see our guide to liquid damage and how to respond immediately.

If your device has wider damage and liquid has affected multiple systems, we may recommend a full logic board repair rather than a series of small fixes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is liquid damage covered by AppleCare+?

No. AppleCare+ covers accidental damage from drops and cracks, but liquid damage is explicitly excluded. You'll need accidental damage coverage from your device manufacturer or a third-party insurance provider.

Q: Can I repair a liquid-damaged device myself?

Not safely. Opening your device yourself will void any warranty and risks further damage. Rice does not work, it introduces dust and extends moisture drying time. Professional disassembly, cleaning with specialist solvents, and component-level testing require equipment and training most users don't have.

Q: How long can my device survive liquid exposure?

iPhones and iPads with modern seals can survive brief freshwater immersion. MacBooks have no water resistance. Liquid damage begins the moment water enters the casing, but success depends on whether power is applied. A powered-off device left dry for 48 hours has a much better chance than one that was turned on while wet.

Q: What if my device won't turn on after liquid damage?

Do not attempt to charge or power it on. This is usually a protection circuit responding to detected corrosion or short circuits. Bring it in for assessment. Our diagnostic fee is R599 and includes full testing. Most devices that won't power on after liquid exposure can be recovered through board-level repair.

Q: Will my data be safe during liquid damage repair?

Yes. We do not erase or format your device. We repair the hardware and return it to you with all data intact. If the storage is physically damaged and unrecoverable, we'll tell you before we proceed. Data recovery from damaged storage is a separate, specialised service.

Q: How do I prevent liquid damage in future?

Use a protective case with raised bezels, keep your device away from the edge of tables and desks, and consider a laptop sleeve or keyboard cover if you work in high-risk environments. For MacBooks, a simple keyboard protector is worth the investment. For iPhones, modern models are reasonably water-resistant if you avoid intentional submersion and regularly check that the seals haven't degraded.
