iPhone Overheating: When Should You Worry?

An iPhone that feels warm during charging is usually behaving as designed, but an iPhone that gets hot while idle, drains its battery in hours or shows a temperature warning is telling you something i.

Key Takeaways

  • Warmth during fast charging, gaming or navigation is expected; heat at idle or during light use is not.
  • A battery past its useful life is the most common cause of abnormal iPhone heat we see in Johannesburg.
  • Charging heat that concentrates near the charging port points to a port or charging circuit fault rather than the battery.
  • Repeated temperature warnings accelerate battery wear and can throttle performance permanently.
  • An assessment from R599 identifies whether the heat source is the battery, the charging circuit or the board.
  • Why does my iPhone get warm while charging?

Lithium batteries generate heat as they absorb charge, and fast charging roughly doubles that heat. A phone that is warm to the touch during the first half of a charge cycle, then cools as the rate tapers, is working exactly as Apple designed it. Apple's own battery guidance describes this as expected behaviour.

The warmth becomes a concern when it continues after charging stops, when the phone is hot rather than warm, or when charging heat appears suddenly on a phone that used to charge cool. Those changes mean a component has started working harder than it should.

In our workshop we log the charge temperature of every iPhone that comes in for battery work, and the pattern is consistent: a healthy battery warms the whole back of the phone evenly, while a failing one creates a hot spot over the battery itself.

Is it bad if my iPhone is hot while I am not using it?

Yes. Heat at idle is the single clearest sign that something is wrong. A phone doing nothing should be at room temperature. If it is warm in your pocket or on the desk, a process is running flat out, the battery is degrading, or a board component is leaking current.

The quick software check is Settings, Battery, and look at which apps consumed power in the background. If the battery graph shows steady drain with the screen off, back up the phone and have it assessed. Idle heat plus fast drain is the combination we take most seriously, because a chemically stressed battery that stays hot is on the path to swelling. We cover those warning signs in our post on swollen battery warning signs, and the chemistry is the same in an iPhone.

Which iPhone heat patterns point to which fault?

Where the heat sits tells us where to look. Heat spread across the upper back during gaming is the chip working hard and is routine. A hot strip over the battery during light use points to battery wear. Heat concentrated at the bottom edge near the charging port, especially while plugged in, points to the port or the charging circuit.

Johannesburg adds its own pattern: after a load shedding block ends, mains voltage can spike as the grid recovers, and cheap chargers pass that spike straight into the phone. We see a steady stream of charging circuit faults in the week after heavy outage schedules. A surge-protected plug or an original charger absorbs most of that risk.

Does heat permanently damage an iPhone battery?

It does. Heat is the main accelerator of lithium battery ageing. A battery that regularly runs hot loses capacity faster, which makes it work harder and run hotter still, a loop that ends with the phone shutting down under load or the battery swelling. Once capacity drops below about 80 percent, replacement is the sensible fix.

You can check your battery's reported health under Settings, Battery, Battery Health and Charging. If the maximum capacity has fallen sharply within a few months, heat is usually the reason. Our guide to iPhone battery replacement in Johannesburg covers what the replacement involves, and our iPhone battery replacement service page has the current details.

When should an overheating iPhone go straight to a workshop?

Three situations justify an immediate assessment: a temperature warning on screen more than once, heat combined with a bulging screen or back glass, and heat combined with sudden shutdowns. Each of those means the fault has moved beyond an app misbehaving and into hardware territory.

A bulging screen or creaking back glass means battery swelling has already started. Stop charging the phone, keep it somewhere cool and away from anything flammable, and have it opened professionally. Piercing or compressing a swollen lithium cell is genuinely dangerous.

The same thermal logic applies to Macs, which we covered in our guide to MacBook overheating fixes, but a phone's smaller body gives heat far less room to escape, so faults show up faster.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my iPhone overheat in the car?

Navigation keeps the screen, GPS and mobile radios all running while the phone sits in direct sun on a windscreen mount, often while charging. That is the heaviest combined load most iPhones ever see. Use a vent mount out of the sun and the problem usually disappears.

Should I put a hot iPhone in the fridge?

No. Rapid cooling causes condensation inside the phone, and moisture on a powered board causes corrosion. Move the phone to shade, remove the case, stop charging and let it cool at room temperature.

Can a cracked screen cause overheating?

Not directly, but a damaged screen or frame can press on the battery underneath, and a phone that has been dropped hard can have a damaged battery that heats up later. If heat started after a drop, have the battery inspected.

Why does my iPhone get hot only on the charger?

Heat only while charging, concentrated near the port, suggests the charging port, the cable or the charging circuit. Try an original cable and adapter first. If the heat continues, the port or the power management circuit needs testing.

Does iOS slow down a hot iPhone?

Yes. Thermal management reduces performance, pauses charging and dims the screen to shed heat. Occasional throttling on a hot day is routine. Daily throttling in ordinary use means the heat source is internal and worth diagnosing.

How much does it cost to find the cause of overheating?

Our diagnostic assessment on an iPhone is from R599, excluding VAT. We test the battery under load, measure charging behaviour and isolate whether the heat comes from the battery, the charging circuit or the board, then quote the specific repair in writing.
