iMac Repair in Johannesburg β€” Screen, RAM, SSD, and Logic Board

iMac not turning on, slow, or showing a distorted display? Here is what iMac repairs involve and what is worth fixing vs replacing.

# iMac Repair in Johannesburg β€” Screen, RAM, SSD, and Logic Board

Your iMac has always been reliable, but now something's wrong. The screen has gone fuzzy, it's running like a slow computer, or worse, it won't start at all. Before you assume it's time to replace the whole machine, it's worth understanding what's actually broken and whether a repair makes financial sense.

At ZA Support in Hyde Park, we've been fixing iMacs for years and we've seen every problem imaginable. Some repairs cost under R2,000 and breathe new life into your machine. Others are expensive enough that you should seriously consider upgrading. This guide walks you through the most common iMac issues in Johannesburg and what you can realistically expect.

iMac Screen and Display Issues

One of the most obvious signs of trouble is a broken or distorted display. Your iMac might show lines, discolouration, complete darkness, or a flickering image. The frustrating part is that the problem could be the screen itself or the logic board driving it, and you won't know until someone opens it up.

**External display test first.** Plug an external monitor into your iMac's USB-C or Thunderbolt port. If the external display works perfectly, your iMac itself is fine and only the built-in screen needs replacing. If the external monitor also shows problems, you're likely looking at a logic board fault instead.

A built-in iMac screen replacement typically costs between R3,500 and R6,500 depending on the model and screen type. Logic board repairs are more expensive and more risky, sometimes costing R8,000 or more. This is where an honest assessment becomes critical. For older iMacs, these repairs might not justify the cost of the whole machine.

RAM and Performance Problems

If your iMac has slowed to a crawl, opens applications painfully slowly, or freezes regularly, RAM is often the culprit. The good news is that RAM upgrades or replacements are straightforward and affordable.

Start by checking how much RAM you're actually using. Open Activity Monitor (search for it in Spotlight), click the Memory tab, and look at the "Memory Pressure" graph. If it's in the yellow or red zone, you need more RAM. Many older iMacs shipped with 8GB, which isn't enough for modern Mac users juggling browsers, design software, or video work.

Upgrading from 8GB to 16GB costs around R1,200 to R2,500 depending on your iMac model, and you'll feel the difference immediately. This is one of the most cost-effective repairs you can make. For newer iMacs where RAM is soldered to the board, unfortunately, this upgrade isn't an option, but older models like the 27-inch iMac from 2013 to 2017 can be upgraded easily.

SSD Problems and Storage

Modern iMacs come with solid state drives instead of traditional hard drives, which is faster but also means replacement requires more care. A failing SSD shows up as spinning wheels, kernel panics, or the Mac refusing to start up at all.

Before assuming your SSD is broken, restart your iMac and hold Command + S to boot into single-user mode. Run the **fsck** command by typing fsck -fy at the prompt. This can sometimes fix minor file system errors without a full drive replacement.

If that doesn't work, your SSD probably needs replacing. Costs vary from R2,000 to R5,000 including labour and a fresh installation of macOS, depending on the storage capacity you choose. This is worth doing on any iMac that's otherwise healthy. A new SSD can make a five-year-old machine feel brand new again.

Logic Board Failures

The logic board is the heart of your iMac, and when it fails, you're facing the most expensive repair. Signs include the Mac not turning on at all, freezing constantly, strange behaviour with external devices, or problems that don't fit any other category.

Logic board repair is complex and sometimes impossible. Components can fail due to heat damage, liquid damage, or just age. Repair costs start at R4,000 for diagnosis and can exceed R10,000 for replacement. Honestly, if your iMac is over seven years old and the logic board is failing, you should seriously consider buying a new machine instead.

When to Repair vs When to Replace

Here's the practical truth: if your iMac is under six years old and the repair costs less than R6,000, it's usually worth fixing. If it's older than that or the repair costs more than half the value of a replacement Mac, walk away.
