Which MacBook Screen Fault Do You Have?

Vertical lines, pressure marks, backlight bleed and flickering all look alarming on a MacBook display, but each one points to a different component and a different repair. This guide walks you through.

Key Takeaways

  • The pattern on the screen tells you which component failed: the panel, the display cable, the backlight circuit or the logic board.
  • Vertical or horizontal lines that move when you flex the lid gently usually mean a panel or cable fault, not a logic board problem.
  • Backlight faults show a very dim image that is still visible under a torch, and they are often board-level repairs rather than full screen replacements.
  • Pressure marks and dark blotches are physical panel damage and always need a panel replacement.
  • A professional assessment from R899 confirms the exact fault before any repair is quoted, so you never pay for a part you do not need.
  • What does a vertical line on a MacBook screen mean?

A single coloured vertical line, or a cluster of them, usually means the LCD panel itself has a failed column driver or a damaged ribbon connection inside the panel. If the lines appear or vanish when the lid angle changes, the display cable is the more likely culprit. Either way, the logic board is usually healthy.

In our workshop we test this by connecting the MacBook to an external monitor. If the external image is perfect, the fault sits in the lid assembly: the panel, the display cable or the hinge-area flex. We have assessed more than 12,000 MacBooks in Johannesburg and this single test rules the logic board in or out within minutes.

A line that is always present at every lid angle tends to be the panel. A line that comes and goes with lid movement tends to be the cable. We have covered cable wear in detail in our post on MacBook flexgate display cable failure.

Why does my MacBook screen look dark but still show a faint image?

A faint, ghostly image that you can only see by shining a torch at the screen is the classic sign of a backlight failure. The panel is still drawing the picture, but the LED strip that lights it has no power. This is usually a blown backlight fuse or driver circuit on the logic board, not a broken screen.

This distinction matters for your wallet. Many repair shops quote a full display replacement for a backlight fault, which replaces a healthy panel and ignores the real cause. A board-level backlight repair restores the original display. We explain the symptoms further in our guide to MacBook backlight failure and dim screens.

Backlight circuits on the Highveld take extra punishment: load shedding recoveries send inrush spikes through chargers, and we see a clear rise in backlight fuse failures in the weeks after heavy outage schedules.

What are the dark blotches or smudge marks on my display?

Dark blotches that do not move, often with a bruise-like edge, are pressure marks. The liquid crystal layer has been compressed, usually by closing the lid on an earbud, a cable or a pen, or by carrying the MacBook in an overstuffed bag. The damage is physical and permanent, so the panel must be replaced.

Pressure damage is one of the most common faults we see on 13-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro models because the lid is thin and the bag is where these machines live. If the mark is spreading week by week, the compressed layer is leaking and the panel will continue to deteriorate.

Is a pink or magenta tint a screen fault or a software problem?

A pink or magenta tint across the whole display can be a panel fault, a cable seating issue or, on some models, a known panel batch problem. Before assuming hardware, check whether the tint appears in screenshots. A tint that shows in a screenshot is software or GPU-related; a tint only visible on the physical screen is the panel or cable.

We wrote a full breakdown of this symptom in our post on the MacBook Pro pink tint issue, including which models we see it on most in Johannesburg.

When is a screen fault actually a logic board problem?

If the external monitor shows the same corruption, artefacts or colour distortion as the built-in display, the fault sits before the screen: the GPU or the display output circuitry on the logic board. Lines in screenshots, distortion on both displays and faults that follow the machine to any monitor all point to the board.

Our component-level team repairs these daily. The warning signs overlap heavily with the symptoms we list in MacBook Pro logic board failure signs, and a proper diagnosis prevents the most expensive mistake in Mac repair: replacing a perfect display to fix a board fault. For a board-level fault, see our logic board repair service.

How much does it cost to identify the fault properly?

A full diagnostic assessment on a MacBook is from R899, excluding VAT, at our Hyde Park workshop. We open the machine, test the panel, cable, backlight circuit and board output separately, and give you a written quote for the specific component that failed. Apple's own Mac support resources recommend professional service for display faults, and screen repair costs vary widely by model: our MacBook screen repair cost guide shows the current ranges.

The assessment fee exists because guessing is expensive. A wrong part on a modern MacBook display can cost more than the correct board-level repair.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep using a MacBook with lines on the screen?

Yes, in the short term. Panel and cable faults do not usually spread to other components. The exception is a fault that worsens with lid movement, because continued opening and closing can tear a weakened cable completely and take the backlight circuit with it.

Will an external monitor work if my MacBook screen is broken?

Almost always, yes. If the logic board is healthy, the MacBook will drive an external display perfectly, which is also the quickest way to confirm the fault is in the lid assembly rather than the board. It is a useful stopgap while you arrange a repair.

Do pressure marks spread over time?

Often they do. A compressed liquid crystal layer can continue to leak, and the blotch grows over weeks or months. If the mark has visibly changed since you first noticed it, plan the panel replacement sooner rather than later.

Is backlight repair cheaper than screen replacement?

Usually, yes. A backlight fault is typically a board-level repair that preserves your original panel. A full display assembly on recent MacBook Pro models is one of the most expensive parts on the machine, so confirming which fault you have before buying parts matters.

    Does AppleCare cover screen faults?

AppleCare+ covers accidental damage with an excess fee, and standard warranty covers manufacturing defects. Pressure marks and drop damage are classed as accidental. If your machine is out of coverage, an independent assessment gives you a repair-versus-replace answer in writing.

How long does a MacBook screen repair take in Johannesburg?

Most panel and cable replacements are completed within a few working days once the correct part for your exact model is confirmed. Board-level backlight repairs are often quicker. Turnaround is confirmed after assessment because it depends entirely on your specific model and the part required.

    Book a Screen Assessment

If your MacBook display shows any of these faults, book a diagnostic assessment at our Hyde Park workshop or WhatsApp us with a photo of the screen. You can also call 064 529 5863. Courtney Bentley and the team will identify the exact component at fault, from R899 excluding VAT, before any repair is quoted.
