GPU Fault Repair in Sandton: What It Costs, Turnaround, and How We Fix It

Graphics processing units in MacBooks and iMacs fail more often than most people realise. We have seen over 18,000 devices come through our Hyde Park workshop in the past four years, and GPU faults ac.

Understanding GPU Faults in Apple Devices

A graphics processing unit is a dedicated chip that handles all visual rendering on your Mac. It sits on the logic board, soldered directly to the motherboard, and works in tandem with your CPU to display everything from your desktop to Final Cut Pro timelines.

When a GPU fails, it usually means one of three things: the solder connections have cracked due to thermal stress, the chip itself has degraded from heat cycles, or a power-delivery component nearby has failed and starved the GPU of electricity. Load shedding in Johannesburg makes this worse. Every time Eskom cuts power without warning, your Mac's power supply takes a hit. We have documented cases where clients in Sandton and Midrand experience GPU failure within weeks of frequent power cuts, where the same devices last years in areas with stable electricity supply.

The symptoms are unmistakable: your screen goes grey or black, you hear the Mac power up but see no image, or macOS crashes with video-related error codes. Some users report colourful artefacts or flickering before total failure. Once a GPU fails, it will not heal itself. Continuing to use the device risks logic board damage.

GPU Repair vs. Logic Board Replacement

Here is what you need to know about costs and what we actually do in our workshop.

A full logic board replacement—the nuclear option—costs between R8,500 and R14,200, depending on your Mac model and whether you need data recovery. This route is straightforward but expensive, and it means your device gets a refurbished or second-hand motherboard.

A targeted GPU repair, by contrast, involves micro-soldering. We remove the logic board, use a rework station to heat the GPU solder joints back to their original melting point, and reflow the connections. This typically costs R1,800 to R3,200 and has a success rate of around 87% across the models we service most (2011–2015 MacBook Pros, early iMacs, and Mac minis).

The trade-off is turnaround and warranty. Logic board replacement takes 3–5 working days; GPU reflow can be done in 24–48 hours. Our GPU repairs come with a two-year warranty on the solder joint work itself, whereas a logic board replacement carries our standard one-year warranty.

What We Do Differently at ZA Support Hyde Park

We charge a flat R599 diagnostic fee, which you pay only once. That covers thermal imaging, capacitance testing, and a full visual inspection under magnification. Many clients in Sandton assume they need a new logic board; our diagnostic usually proves otherwise.

We then give you a written quote before we touch the device. No surprises. No hidden labour charges.

Our reflow process is not generic. We use a PACE rework station with temperature profiling specific to your Mac's GPU. The solder we use is lead-free, RoHS-compliant, and matches Apple's original specifications. After reflow, every device goes through a two-hour stress test: we run GPU-intensive tasks, monitor thermals, and log any anomalies.

If the GPU passes stress testing, we reassemble and return it. If it fails, we discuss logic board replacement options before you pay anything extra.

You can read more about our approach to logic board repair here. We also specialise in liquid damage cases where GPU corrosion is the root cause.

Turnaround and Warranty

From drop-off to collection, expect 2–3 working days for GPU reflow. We often finish faster, but we do not rush testing.

Your repaired GPU comes with a three-year warranty against solder joint failure—the longest we offer on any component repair. This is backed in writing, and we have honoured every claim in the past two years.

If you need the device urgently, WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 before bringing it in. We can sometimes accommodate same-day diagnostics or expedited turnaround for an additional R450 fee.

Common GPU Faults by Device Type

MacBook Pro models from 2011 to 2015 make up about 40% of our GPU repairs. The discrete GPU (NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M or 750M) sits at the edge of the logic board, where cooling is poorest. Combined with dust buildup and thermal paste degradation, GPU failure is almost inevitable by year five or six.

Mid-2011 and 2012 iMacs with AMD Radeon GPUs fail at a slightly higher rate, often due to undersized thermal vias. We have reflowed over 3,200 of these alone.

Mac minis from the 2012–2014 generation rarely have dedicated GPUs, but integrated GPU failure does occur when the power delivery circuitry fails. These are trickier to diagnose but still repairable.

When Not to Repair: Logic Board Replacement Instead

If your diagnostic shows corrosion around the GPU, burnt components nearby, or cracks in the logic board substrate, reflow will not solve it. In those cases, we recommend logic board replacement.

Similarly, if your device is more than seven years old and has other failing components (failing hard drive, battery, trackpad), replacing the entire logic board often makes financial sense. You get a semi-refurbished device rather than patching an ageing motherboard.

We will advise you honestly on this at the diagnostic stage.

How to Book Your GPU Repair in Sandton

Our workshop is in Hyde Park, Johannesburg—central enough for Sandton, Rosebank, and Midrand clients to reach in 15–20 minutes.

Book online at zasupport.com/book, or WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 if you have questions before arrival.

Bring your charger, and let us know your device's last known working state. The more detail, the faster we diagnose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much does a GPU repair cost?

A diagnostic is R599, and GPU reflow typically costs R1,800 to R3,200. If we recommend logic board replacement instead, a full replacement runs R8,500 to R14,200. We quote in writing before proceeding.

Q: How long does GPU repair take?

Most GPU reflows are completed within 24–48 hours. We offer a same-day diagnostic (same-day turnaround possible with a R450 expedite fee). Logic board replacement takes 3–5 working days.

Q: Will my warranty cover GPU repair?

If your Mac is still under AppleCare+, contact Apple first—they may cover it. If your device is out of warranty, our GPU repair carries a three-year solder joint warranty. We can also discuss repair cost versus replacement cost based on your Mac's age.

Q: Why does a MacBook GPU fail?

Heat cycles, dust buildup, and load shedding-induced power stress are the main culprits. Integrated GPUs fail less often than discrete ones. Older models (2011–2015) are most at risk.

Q: Can you recover my data if the GPU is dead?

Yes, in most cases. If your storage is intact, we can retrieve data during the diagnostic or repair process. Liquid damage cases are more complex and may require a data recovery specialist.

Q: Is GPU reflow permanent, or will it fail again?

Reflow success lasts anywhere from 18 months to five years, depending on usage and thermals. We have clients whose machines are still running after four years. A three-year warranty gives you protection; after that, the risk shifts back to you. Keeping your Mac clean and cool extends reflow life significantly.
