GPU Fault Repair Illovo: What It Costs and How Long It Takes

If your MacBook or iMac has developed a GPU fault, you're probably looking at a significant repair bill and wondering whether it's worth fixing. We understand that frustration. In our Hyde Park worksh.

The good news: most GPU faults in Illovo and the surrounding areas can be fixed without replacing the entire logic board. The bad news: turnaround times vary, and costs depend heavily on which Mac model you own and what caused the failure.

This post walks you through what a GPU fault actually is, why it happens, what it costs at ZA Support, and what you can expect when you bring your machine to us in Johannesburg.

What Is a GPU Fault, and How Do You Know You Have One?

Your Mac's GPU (graphics processing unit) handles all the visual rendering on your screen. When it fails, you'll notice:

  • Horizontal or vertical lines across your display
  • Flickering or distorted graphics
  • Kernel panics or unexpected shutdowns during video playback
  • Artifacts: strange shapes or colours appearing in the corners of your screen
  • Complete loss of video output, even though your Mac powers on
  • Not every visual problem is a GPU fault. Sometimes it's a display cable, a faulty display itself, or even software corruption. That's why we start every repair with a proper diagnostic. Our R599 assessment includes full hardware testing, and we'll tell you exactly whether the GPU is the culprit.

In Illovo specifically, we've noticed GPU failures spike during summer months when load shedding causes power fluctuations. Inconsistent power delivery can degrade GPU capacitors over time, even on newer machines. If you've experienced frequent blackouts in the last few months, that's often worth mentioning when you bring your Mac in.

Why GPU Faults Happen in Your MacBook or iMac

GPU failures aren't random. They follow patterns we see repeatedly.

Age and heat cycles. Most GPU faults occur in machines between four and eight years old. The soldered GPU on the logic board experiences thousands of thermal cycles as your Mac heats up and cools down. Eventually, the solder joints crack microscopically, and electrical contact is lost.

Liquid damage. Water or coffee near the logic board doesn't always kill a Mac instantly. Instead, it corrodes connections around the GPU, leading to intermittent faults that worsen over weeks. If your machine has suffered liquid damage, our liquid damage assessment and repair service can often save the GPU itself.

Power surges. Load shedding and sudden power restoration in Johannesburg create voltage spikes that can damage GPU components. We've seen this happen dozens of times in the past two years alone.

Manufacturing defects. Some MacBook Pro models from 2012–2015 had a known GPU issue related to inadequate thermal management. If you own one of these machines, your GPU is statistically more likely to fail—but it's also repairable.

GPU Fault Repair: What It Costs at ZA Support

Pricing depends on your Mac model and the exact nature of the fault.

Assessment: R599 (includes full diagnostics and a written report)

    GPU reballing or micro-soldering: R2,200–R3,800

This is the most common repair. We remove the GPU from the logic board, clean the solder joints, replace any damaged ball connections, and reflow the solder under a specialised microscope. The process takes 3–5 working days.

    Logic board component replacement: R3,200–R5,400

If the GPU itself is physically damaged or if surrounding capacitors have failed, we may need to replace specific components rather than just reballing. This is more involved and takes 5–7 working days.

    Full logic board replacement: R5,800–R12,900

On very old machines or if damage is extensive, a replacement board is sometimes more cost-effective than micro-soldering. We source genuine or certified Apple boards and test them thoroughly before installation.

All repairs come with a three-year warranty on parts and labour. If your GPU fails again within that window because of our repair, we'll fix it free of charge.

We also offer a no-fix, no-fee guarantee. If we can't repair your Mac, you pay nothing except the R599 assessment fee. That means you'll always know exactly what you're dealing with before you commit to the full repair.

Turnaround Time for GPU Repairs in Johannesburg

Most GPU repairs take 5–7 working days from the moment you drop off your machine. This includes:

  • Full diagnostics and testing (1 day)
  • GPU reballing or component replacement (2–3 days)
  • Reassembly and burn-in testing (1–2 days)
  • Final quality check before collection
  • During load shedding periods, we sometimes experience slight delays if we lose power in the middle of a delicate operation. We've invested in backup power systems to minimise this risk, but we always communicate with you if your repair will take longer than expected.

If you need your Mac urgently, we offer express service. Bring your machine in on a Monday or Tuesday morning, and we'll prioritise it for completion by Friday (additional R450 fee applies). This works for straightforward reballing jobs; complex logic board replacements still require the standard timeline.

How to Get Your GPU Repaired

Start by booking an appointment online at zasupport.com/book, or WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 if you prefer to speak to someone first. Let us know your Mac model, what symptoms you're seeing, and whether your machine has ever suffered water damage or overheating.

Our workshop is in Hyde Park, five minutes from the Illovo border. We're open Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:30, and Saturday 10:00–14:00. Parking is free and easy.

When you arrive, we'll run our R599 assessment. You'll get a full report, photographs of any damaged components, and a fixed quote before any repair work begins. No surprises, no hidden costs.

If your GPU issue is linked to a broader logic board repair, we handle that too. We've developed techniques for addressing power delivery problems and capacitor failures that often go hand-in-hand with GPU faults.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you fix a GPU fault without replacing the logic board?

Yes, in most cases. GPU reballing and micro-soldering allow us to repair the GPU itself without a full board replacement. This costs less and often takes less time. We can only confirm whether this is possible after diagnostics, but we're successful in about 85% of cases we see.

Q: How long does a GPU repair actually take?

Standard repairs take 5–7 working days. Express service takes until Friday if you drop off early in the week (additional R450 fee). Very complex repairs involving multiple failed components may take up to 10 working days.

Q: Is a GPU repair worth it, or should I buy a new Mac?

If your machine is four to seven years old and otherwise healthy, a GPU repair is almost always worth it. A reballing repair (R2,200–R3,800) costs far less than a new Mac. Older machines (8+ years) may not be worth repairing unless sentimental value is high. We'll advise honestly after diagnostics.

Q: What causes GPU failures in Johannesburg specifically?

Heat cycles, dust accumulation in the cooling system, and power surges from load shedding are the main culprits. Summer months see more failures. Proper cooling maintenance can extend GPU life significantly.

Q: Will my GPU fault get worse if I keep using my Mac?

Almost certainly. A failing GPU typically deteriorates over weeks or months. Using your Mac heavily during this time can accelerate the failure and potentially damage other components. Once you notice symptoms, we recommend getting it assessed within two weeks.

Q: Do you offer any warranty on GPU repairs?

Yes. All repairs come with a three-year warranty on parts and labour. If your GPU fails again within three years for reasons related to our repair, we'll fix it at no charge.
