GPU Fault Repair Cost in Johannesburg: What You'll Actually Pay at ZA Support

Your MacBook's screen flickers. Games stutter. Video rendering grinds to a halt. You suspect the GPU, and you're probably right. Graphics processing faults are among the most common hardware failures w.

The honest answer depends on your machine, the fault type, and how quickly you need it fixed. But we can give you real numbers based on what we've repaired over the past five years.

GPU Faults: Why They Happen and What They Cost

In our Hyde Park Johannesburg workshop, we've handled more than 18,000 MacBook and Mac mini repairs. GPU faults account for roughly one in four of those, and they're not all the same.

Some machines have discrete graphics cards (separate chips). Others use integrated graphics built into the processor. Some older models, particularly certain 15-inch MacBook Pros from 2012 to 2015, are notorious for what Apple calls "stray solder balls" that crack under thermal stress. We see these failures constantly.

A standalone GPU assessment starts from R599 in our workshop. This includes diagnostic testing, thermal imaging, and a written report. If you bring your machine in, we'll have an answer for you the same day in most cases.

The actual repair cost ranges widely:

  • Logic board micro-soldering (reflow): R2,400-R4,200
  • Discrete GPU replacement: R3,800-R6,500
  • Full logic board replacement: R5,200-R9,800
  • Why the range? A 2013 MacBook Pro needs different work than a 2018 model. Older machines often need micro-soldering, a delicate process where we heat the logic board to reflow cracked solder joints. Newer Macs sometimes need component-level replacement.

Turnaround is typically 5-7 working days for micro-soldering, depending on load shedding schedules in Johannesburg. If we need to order a replacement logic board, add another 3-5 days.

    How We Diagnose GPU Problems

Before you pay anything, you need certainty. We use two main approaches:

Visual and thermal testing: We run the machine under load using diagnostic software, rendering tasks, GPU stress tests, temperature monitoring. A faulty GPU usually shows one of three things: kernel panics, screen artifacts (coloured lines or blocks), or thermal throttling (the machine slows down dramatically to cool itself).

Logic board inspection: Under magnification, we look for physical signs, burnt components, cracked solder, discolouration from heat damage. This is particularly important for the 2012-2015 MacBook Pro models, where the GPU die and its solder joints are common failure points.

If the fault is software-related, a corrupted driver, a dodgy graphics extension, we'll spot that too and save you thousands. It happens more often than you'd think.

The Load Shedding Factor: Why Timing Matters in Johannesburg

Here's something unique to Johannesburg that affects repair costs and timelines: load shedding. Micro-soldering requires precise temperature control and uninterrupted power. A power cut halfway through a reflow can ruin the board permanently.

During Stage 6 load shedding, we pause micro-soldering work and focus on diagnostics, replacements, and other repairs that don't depend on continuous power. This extends typical turnaround by 2-3 days. It's not ideal, but it's safer than risking your logic board.

We keep our Hyde Park workshop on a battery-backed UPS system for critical work, but we're honest: if load shedding is severe, some repairs shift. We always tell you this upfront.

Common GPU Faults and Their Fixes

Kernel panics and freezes: Usually a GPU driver issue or thermal problem. Cost: R599 assessment + possibly R1,200-R1,800 for software repair or thermal paste replacement.

Screen artifacts (lines, blocks, colour shifts): Often VRAM (video memory) failure or GPU chip damage. Cost: typically R3,500-R6,500 depending on whether we can reflow or need to replace the chip.

No video output: Can be GPU, display cable, or logic board. We test each systematically. Cost: R599-R9,800 depending on the culprit.

Overheating and throttling: Sometimes GPU fans have failed, or thermal paste has degraded. Cost: R1,200-R3,200.

Performance degradation in games or video software: Could be GPU failure, driver corruption, or RAM issues. We diagnose first. Cost: R599 assessment + R800-R4,500 repair.

    Our Warranty on GPU Repairs

We back every repair with either a 12-month or 3-year warranty depending on the work type. Micro-soldering carries a 12-month parts warranty. Component replacements, new GPU, new RAM, new logic board, carry a 3-year warranty.

That matters. GPU failures can recur if the underlying thermal or power delivery problem isn't solved. Our warranty covers that. If your machine fails again within the warranty period due to the same fault, we fix it at no charge (parts and labour).

When Should You Consider Replacement Instead of Repair?

If your machine is older than six years and the GPU failure is part of a pattern of hardware failures, replacement might make sense financially. A used MacBook Pro from 2017 or 2018 costs R8,000-R14,000 in the Johannesburg secondhand market. If your 2012 machine needs a R7,000 GPU repair plus you're already dealing with a failing battery and worn keyboard, you're spending R10,000+ on a machine that's become unreliable.

We'll always tell you this honestly. If repair is the better choice, we'll do it well. If replacement makes sense, we'll say so.

    How to Get Started

WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 with a photo and description of what's happening. We'll either give you a rough quote or book you in for a formal assessment. You can also book online at zasupport.com/book if you prefer to schedule a drop-off at our Hyde Park workshop.

The assessment fee is R599, and if you proceed with repair, we credit it toward the final bill. No hidden charges. No pressure.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does a GPU repair usually take?

Micro-soldering takes 5-7 working days. Component replacement can take 7-10 days if we need to order parts. Load shedding in Johannesburg can add 2-3 days. We always give you a realistic timeline when you drop off your machine.

Q: Is micro-soldering reliable, or will my GPU fail again?

Micro-soldering works well if the underlying problem was thermal stress or fatigue. Success rate is roughly 85% for a full 12 months. If your machine overheats again or the thermal solution isn't improved, the fault can recur. That's why we always check cooling system health during GPU repairs.

Q: Can I claim GPU repair on my insurance?

Most gadget insurance policies in South Africa cover accidental damage but exclude wear and tear. GPU failure from age or normal use is usually not covered. Check your policy's fine print. We can provide a repair invoice for your insurer's records if needed.

Q: Why is GPU repair more expensive than battery replacement?

GPU repair requires precision soldering equipment, specialist training, and often replacement components that cost more than a battery. A single logic board can cost R2,000-R5,000. Battery replacement is a straightforward swap: R800-R1,500.

Q: What's the difference between integrated and discrete GPU repair costs?

Integrated GPUs are soldered directly to the logic board, so repair means fixing the board itself, usually expensive. Discrete GPUs (separate chips) can sometimes be replaced as a single unit, which is cheaper. Older MacBooks tend to have integrated graphics; newer ones often have discrete GPUs. We'll explain your machine's architecture during the assessment.

Q: Do you repair GPU faults caused by load shedding power cuts?

Power cuts rarely cause GPU faults directly, they're more likely to damage the power supply circuit or battery. If your machine stopped working after load shedding, we'll diagnose whether it's GPU, power delivery, or something else. The R599 assessment will show exactly what happened and what it costs to fix.
