What to Do in the First 30 Minutes After a Liquid Spill on Your MacBook

You've just spilled coffee on your MacBook. Your heart rate is climbing. Your instinct is to power it down and rush to the nearest technician. But the next 30 minutes matter far more than you might th.

In our Hyde Park workshop, we've handled over 18,000 liquid-damaged MacBooks since opening our doors. The difference between a device that recovers fully and one that suffers permanent circuit board failure often comes down to what the owner does in those critical first minutes. If you're in Johannesburg and facing this panic right now, this guide will walk you through exactly what to do, and what absolutely not to do.

Stop Using the MacBook Immediately

The moment liquid touches any part of your MacBook, electricity becomes your enemy. Every second the device remains powered, that liquid is traveling through circuits, creating short circuits, and corroding components invisible to the naked eye.

Your first action is non-negotiable: close the lid gently and disconnect the power adapter. Do not wait for the battery to drain. Do not try to save unsaved work. Do not attempt a graceful shutdown. The risk of electrocution and internal damage compounds with each passing second.

If your MacBook is already off, leave it off. Resist the urge to power it back on to "check if it still works." This is the most common mistake we see at our workshop, and it has cost clients thousands in repair bills that could have been avoided.

Tilt and Absorb, But Don't Panic-Dry

Now that the device is off and unplugged, tilt your MacBook slightly. If liquid is pooling on the keyboard deck, you want gravity working with you, not against you. Use a clean, lint-free cloth, not paper towels, which shed fibres into the keyboard mechanism, to absorb what you can see. Dab gently. Do not rub.

Pay attention to the keyboard edges, the trackpad surround, and any visible ports. These are liquid highways into the deeper components. A few minutes of careful absorption can prevent liquid from seeping into the logic board, where the real damage happens.

Do not attempt to dry the interior with heat. Hair dryers, rice bowls, ovens, and sunlight are myths. Heat can actually accelerate corrosion and warp plastic components. Your goal right now is stabilisation, not evaporation.

Prop It Open in a Gravity-Assisted Position

Gently open your MacBook to roughly 45 degrees and leave it in this position. You're allowing gravity to pull any remaining liquid away from the keyboard and towards the case edge, where it can evaporate naturally without dripping into the logic board cavity.

If the spill was extensive, a full cup of coffee or a glass of water, lay the MacBook on its side with the keyboard edge slightly elevated. Do not lay it flat. Flat is the worst position because it allows liquid to settle directly onto the logic board.

Leave it propped open in a warm room (not hot, room temperature is fine) with good air circulation. If you have a fan, point it gently across the device without directing heat at it. Patience now prevents expensive logic board repairs later.

Do Not Attempt Home Remedies

Our technicians regularly encounter MacBooks that have been subjected to rice, silica gel, hair dryers, and even attempted disassembly by the owner. Every single one of these interventions has either caused additional damage or masked the extent of the original problem, making diagnosis and repair harder, and more costly.

Liquid damage assessment requires proper equipment: a thermal imaging camera to detect corrosion hotspots, a multimeter to check circuit continuity, and component-level knowledge of which parts have been compromised. This is not a DIY repair.

Arrange a Professional Assessment Within 24 Hours

Within the next 24 hours, contact a qualified Apple repair specialist. Do not wait a week. Corrosion accelerates rapidly once liquid begins oxidising on circuit traces. The longer you wait, the more components fail silently, and the higher your final repair bill climbs.

At ZA Support in Hyde Park, we offer a comprehensive liquid damage assessment for R599. This assessment includes visual inspection, moisture detection, and a full diagnostic to establish exactly which components have been compromised and what repair options are available. This assessment has helped thousands of Johannesburg clients understand the true cost of their spill before committing to repairs.

Our standard liquid damage repairs carry a 3-year warranty on parts and labour, which gives you genuine protection should any secondary issues emerge after repair.

Understanding Your Repair Options

Not every liquid spill demands a full logic board replacement. Some MacBooks, especially newer models, have better liquid-resistant internals. Others suffer damage only to the keyboard assembly, which is replaceable as a single unit.

Our technicians have completed over 18,000 liquid damage repairs across all MacBook generations. We stock genuine Apple parts and can often repair your device within 2-5 working days, depending on the extent of the damage and parts availability. If a logic board replacement is necessary, we'll discuss the options with you upfront, repair, refurbished board replacement, or, in rare cases, whole-unit replacement, so you understand the full picture before we proceed.

Prevention and Future Awareness

The reality of modern MacBooks is that they're not waterproof, though each generation has improved its internal resistance to moisture. Coffee and tea are particularly corrosive because of their mineral content and acidity. Water is slightly less damaging. Any other liquid, juice, wine, milk, presents specific challenges depending on the sugars and proteins involved.

Keep your MacBook away from drinks whenever possible. Use a keyboard cover if you work near beverages. And remember: if a spill does happen, the first 30 minutes are not about damage control, they're about damage *prevention*.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I dry my MacBook in sunlight or with a hair dryer?

No. Heat accelerates corrosion rather than preventing it. Room temperature, natural air circulation, and propped positioning are all you need. Artificial heat can warp plastic components and damage internal connectors.

Q: My MacBook still powers on after the spill. Should I use it while I wait for a repair appointment?

Absolutely not. A device powering on after liquid exposure does not mean it is undamaged. In fact, powering it on further accelerates corrosion on the logic board. Power it down, unplug it, and leave it off until a technician has assessed it.

Q: Is rice or silica gel an effective way to dry a MacBook?

No. Rice and silica gel are designed to absorb ambient moisture in sealed containers. They cannot reach the liquid inside your MacBook, and placing the device in rice introduces fibres that can clog connectors and exacerbate the problem. Professional assessment is the only reliable option.

Q: How long do repairs typically take at ZA Support?

Liquid damage repairs usually take 2-5 working days from the date we approve the repair. Some assessments require parts to be ordered if your MacBook model requires a specific component. We'll give you a clear timeline once the assessment is complete.

Q: Will my warranty cover liquid damage?

Apple's standard warranty does not cover accidental liquid damage. However, ZA Support offers a 3-year warranty on all repairs we complete, so you're protected against secondary failures once your MacBook is repaired.

Q: What if my MacBook cannot be economically repaired?

If the logic board is beyond repair and a refurbished genuine board would cost more than the device's replacement value, we'll discuss alternatives including whole-unit refurbished MacBooks or even refund options if repair is not viable. We're transparent about this from the start.
