Data Recovery Cost in Johannesburg: What to Expect at ZA Support

Data loss happens fast. A MacBook spill during load shedding, a failed iMac drive after a power surge, an iPad that won't restart after a fall, these are the situations we handle daily here at our Hyde.

This post explains what data recovery actually costs, why prices vary, and how ZA Support approaches recovery in our Johannesburg location.

How Data Recovery Pricing Works

Data recovery isn't a fixed cost because each device fails differently. A MacBook with a failed hard drive requires different work than an iMac with corrupted system files, which is different again from an iPhone with water damage affecting the storage controller.

We start every recovery case with a diagnostic assessment, R599 (including VAT). This is not a guessing game. Our technicians physically inspect the device, run diagnostics on the storage hardware, and determine whether the data is recoverable, partially recoverable, or lost permanently. That assessment tells us the real cost.

From there, pricing depends on three factors: the type of device, the cause of failure, and the extent of damage. A straightforward SSD recovery on a MacBook Air costs less than recovering data from a failed hard drive with mechanical damage. Water damage affecting the logic board alongside storage corruption costs more because we're often repairing the logic board first, work like this requires specialised soldering and component-level repair, which falls under our logic board repair services.

We've recovered data from over 18,000 Apple devices in the past five years. That experience means we can quote accurately and rarely encounter surprises during recovery.

Typical Data Recovery Costs in Johannesburg

For most devices, expect the following ranges:

MacBook and Mac mini: R2,800-R8,500 (SSD or hard drive recovery)

iMac: R3,200-R9,200 (larger drives, sometimes mechanical damage)

iPad and iPhone: R1,800-R4,500 (storage controller damage is common with water exposure)

External drives: R1,200-R6,800 (depends on interface and damage type)

These figures include the assessment. If we determine data is unrecoverable before we begin extraction, you pay only the R599 assessment fee. We don't charge for work we haven't done.

Load shedding has created a specific problem: unscheduled power cuts corrupting file systems. We see this at least four times weekly. These cases are typically cheaper to recover because the storage hardware is intact, only the file system needs repair. Cost: usually R1,800-R3,500.

Why Turnaround Varies

Recovery speed depends on hardware complexity and data volume. A corrupted SSD on a MacBook Air takes 2-4 working days. A mechanical hard drive with degraded sectors takes 7-10 days because we work slowly to avoid further damage. Very large drives (4TB+) take longer simply due to data volume.

We don't charge rush fees, but we're honest about what's realistic. If you need data back in 24 hours, that's not always possible with mechanical drives, and we'll tell you that upfront.

During Johannesburg's peak load shedding season (typically June-August), turnaround can extend by 2-3 days because our workshop operates on backup power and battery systems during outages. This doesn't affect recovery quality, but it does affect schedule.

Water Damage and Data Recovery

Liquid damage is Johannesburg's second-most-common data loss cause after hard drive failure. Coffee, water damage from storms, and even humidity from load shedding-induced temperature changes can affect Apple devices.

When water reaches the storage hardware, recovery becomes a two-stage process. First, we repair or replace the water-damaged logic board. Then we extract data from the storage. Because both steps are necessary, costs run R4,500-R9,200 depending on extent.

If the device has already been powered on after water exposure, corrosion may have progressed to the storage controller. This makes recovery harder and more expensive. Our advice: don't turn the device on. Don't let it dry naturally. Bring it to us immediately.

We've recovered data from more than 12,000 water-damaged devices. Most are recoverable if brought in before secondary damage occurs.

Our Warranty on Recovery Work

Every data recovery at ZA Support includes a 3-year warranty on the recovered drive or storage module we install. If the replacement component fails within 36 months, we replace it at no charge. This isn't standard in Johannesburg, many recovery services offer none.

We also verify recovered data before returning your device. You'll see a full file listing and spot-check several folders before you leave our Hyde Park workshop. If data is missing or corrupted, we know before you do and can attempt additional extraction if possible.

Getting Your Data Back Safely

Here's the process:

  • Book online at zasupport.com/book or WhatsApp us on 064 529 5863 to schedule your assessment.
  • Bring the device to our Hyde Park location. Don't attempt repair yourself.
  • We'll diagnose and quote the recovery cost. You decide whether to proceed.
  • Recovery begins. You'll receive updates every 48 hours.
  • We verify all data before you collect.
  • Most clients are surprised at how straightforward this is. The uncertainty beforehand is usually worse than the actual recovery.

    When Recovery Isn't Possible

Roughly 8% of devices that reach us have physically destroyed storage, circuit board corrosion, shattered flash chips, or fire damage. We'll tell you honestly if recovery is impossible, and you'll pay only the R599 assessment fee.

If a device has been recovered before and fails again shortly after, the replacement component is faulty, we replace it free under warranty.

Why Choose ZA Support for Data Recovery

We're not the cheapest option in Johannesburg, but we're transparent. No hidden charges. No "we'll contact you with a final quote" after you've already paid. Your R599 assessment is the only cost before we tell you the full price. We also specialise in Apple devices specifically. Over 15,000 MacBooks and iMacs have passed through our workshop. We understand the specific failure patterns of each model and can recover data that generic computer repair shops consider "lost."

Because we're Johannesburg-based and focused on Apple devices, we understand load shedding's impact, water damage in summer storms, and the specific challenges of the Gauteng climate.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will my data recovery take?

Data recovery typically takes 5-10 working days. Simple cases (corrupted SSD, no physical damage) take 2-4 days. Mechanical hard drives with damaged sectors take 7-10 days because we must work gradually to prevent further deterioration. We provide status updates every 48 hours.

Q: Can you recover data from a MacBook that won't turn on?

Yes. If the drive isn't physically damaged, we can recover data even if the MacBook is completely unresponsive. We remove the storage, connect it to specialist recovery hardware, and extract data at the hardware level. The MacBook's power state is irrelevant.

Q: What if my device has been wet? Can the data still be recovered?

In most cases, yes. Water doesn't typically destroy the storage hardware itself, it damages the logic board and connectors. We repair the logic board, then extract data from the storage. We recover data from water-damaged devices regularly. The key is to stop using the device immediately and bring it to us rather than waiting for it to dry.

Q: Is the R599 assessment fee refundable if I don't want the recovery?

Yes. The R599 assessment fee is completely refundable if we determine recovery is impossible or if you decide not to proceed after our quote. No other charges apply.

Q: Do you offer data recovery for non-Apple devices?

We specialise exclusively in Apple products, MacBooks, iMacs, iPads, iPhones, and Mac minis. For Windows devices or Android phones, we can recommend trusted local specialists, but our team focuses on Apple.

Q: What happens to my data during recovery? Is it secure?

Your device and data remain in our Hyde Park workshop throughout recovery. We don't transfer devices elsewhere. All data is handled confidentially under POPIA regulations. We don't retain copies after recovery is complete, only you receive the recovered data.
